Hope it doesn't come with an embarrassing near 720p display considering the upcoming $249 Moto G8 Power has 6.4" FHD+, 4GB/64GB, 5000mAh battery, mask friendly fingerprint authentication, etc.

People interested in the G8 are not interested in iOS and vice-versa.

So enlighten me, why don't they make the 4 inch phone anymore?

Evolution of the smartphone market, which has been trending towards larger models for some time.

I would not be surprised if the original SE was 4" because it leveraged the existing 4" production process which allowed Apple to hit the $399 price point while still making their desired margin. I fully expect it is the same with this "SE2", but the production process is now 4.7" instead of 4".

Making it smaller would actually increase the production cost because Apple no longer has that production process. For those who continue to use the SE first and foremost because it is 4" might very well pay a higher price for an update in that form factor, but they are a small(er) part of the general smartphone market so Apple is going 4.7" to appeal to the larger portion of that market who prefer / desire a larger phone.

I hope anyone that buys that Moto is aware of the embarrassing 1525/5498 Geekbench score of the 665 processor, vs. 5415/11294 on the A13 (so, like over 4x faster on the vast majority of phone operations & over double the speed on anything multithreaded).
That, to me, is MUCH more significant- as it is real & noticeable; as opposed to 720 vs 1080 on a sub 7” screen, held 2 feet from the face... which may be noticeable to a small subset of fighter pilots with 20/10 “sniper vision”.

I’m really excited for this phone because Apple will have clear low priced, mid-range, and distinguished flagship models all at different price points.

I think at this stage, I'm going to wait for September and get the 5.4" version of the iPhone that's due to come out. It'll be slightly larger than the iPhone SE2/iPhone 8 chassis, so my SE will need to chug on a little longer

I don't know about this. iPhone is as much of a status symbol as it is a phone. This has same basic design as the iPhone 6 from 6 years ago so it's not that sexy, I feel like it doesn't have the same appeal as SE had. This seems to be more of utilitarian tool for elementary school children and people who "need" Apple phone but don't care for status. These people could also buy second hand iPhone 7 for ~100-150$ and it would serve them just as well.

I want SE2 but I wont rush to buy this, I guess I'll wait and hope 5.4" iPhone 12 gets released.

Yea but the G8 runs POS Android. So.

Apple is planning to price its rumored low-cost iPhone at $399, according to a new report out this week from Fast Company.

The site was told by an unspecified source that the iPhone will "likely" sell for $399, backing up a previous report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who said in October that the iPhone would be available at that price point.

iPhone SE and iPhone 8

At $399, the new low-cost iPhone will have the same starting price as the 2016 iPhone SE, which is why some people have referred to it as an "iPhone SE 2." Others have been calling it the "iPhone 9," but we don't yet know what Apple will name it.

We do know quite a bit about its specs, though, thanks to numerous leaks. The upcoming low-cost iPhone will be similar in design to the iPhone 8, with thicker top and bottom bezels and a Touch ID Home button.

It will be equipped with the same A13 chip that's available in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, and it is said to have 3GB RAM. To keep costs low, it will use a single-lens rear camera, though it's not known if the camera will be the same as the wide-angle camera in the iPhone 11. It could be available in 64 and 128GB size options, and colors are expected include Space Gray, Silver, and Red.

Production on the new low-cost iPhone was supposed to begin in February, but Apple's supplier factories are shut down at the current time due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in China. It's not clear if this will affect production plans and if the launch date of the iPhone will be delayed.

Prior rumors suggested we could see the new low-cost iPhone in the first half of 2020, perhaps in March. Apple often holds its first event of the year in March, and if there is indeed a March event in the works this year, we should be hearing about it soon.

The new low-cost iPhone is expected to be a popular iPhone upgrade option for those who are coming from an iPhone 6s or iPhone 7, as the design will be similar. It should also appeal to those who want an affordable iPhone option, those who like Touch ID, and those who prefer smaller form factors, even though it won't be as small as the iPhone SE, Apple's original low-cost iPhone.

Hey look. They are re-releasing the iPhone 6.

It’s supposed to be based on the iPhone 8, which implies glass back/wireless charging.

I'm pretty sure the commenter was talking about the 7+ which does have a zoom lens. The low cost phone will probably be a replacement for the 4.7" iPhone, not the plus-sized 5.5" one.
Yes, there have been no rumors of a 5.5” display, so it would be very surprising if it weren’t 4.7.

Maybe in a few years Apple will be able to do a 5.5” display at $399 for the “SE3”.

More reason it should cost less since iOS < iPadOS and 2019 iPad 7th gen is ~$240 street price. Shrink the iPad with lower material cost for smaller display and battery while adding cellular radio so price of budget iPhone should be no more than $299. May be a moot point afterall and a product launch failure if it doesn't include mask friendly Touch ID.
iPad 7 for $250 doesn’t have a cellular chip. You’re on point if the new iPhone is wifi only. Want LTE? The cost goes to $459. As far as Touch ID vs Face ID people without extremities appreciate Face ID.

Why would you upgrade from a 7 to this? The 7 has a 2x zoom. I’d buy one of these for my dad but he wants the zoom
Do you mean the dual cameras? Because that applies only to the 7 Plus.

Otherwise, it's gonna have an A13 instead of an A10, meaning it'll last about three years longer (in terms of OS/security support), plus you are starting with a fresh battery.

Why can't we get a full flagship with this design and size? When are they going to realize not everyone wants phones with notches. We also want home buttons.

They're going after people like me who have been holding onto our 6s's, despite having the battery replaced and still getting crap battery life. I waited in line for the first iphone and had almost all versions up to the 6s. The product has plateaued at the 6s for me and probably a lot of people. It's fast enough and does what you need it to. I don't need a status symbol, I just need a phone that works. AND I want to pay cash for it... not a fortune. I use real cameras for my photos and a Mac Pro for most things computing/online. I also prefer a smaller phone and fingerprint technology over facial recognition. If someone is using the iPhone as a status symbol these days, that's pretty sad. I thought millennials had figured that out.

What even is a mask-friendly Touch ID? You use your finger with that.

If you're buying a phone just to tout your social status, you've got some rethinking to do. That era of "iPhones are for rich kids" is over.

I wish it would come in a 256GB variant so I could replace my iPod touch with a dedicated music device.

Maybe if they do a small refresh next year, like they did with the SE after a year. But yeah I wouldn’t really expect it with this release. 64 base and 128 for an extra $50, like iPhone 11, makes the most sense to me.

I initially felt that way, but going to bestbuy last week and holding the iPhone 8 reminded how good the size is. It’s just enough smaller than the X that i prefer it to the X. I’ll probably trade my X to get this for the upgraded processor. The weight of the 8 is really nice too.

I’m pretty sure the 8 wasn’t a glass back. At least the one I held the other day wasn’t.

edit: looks like it is glass, but I could have sworn it was matte aluminum on the one I held

Not everyone wants a huge phone and not everyone wants to spend $700+. I fit in the first category and will be getting one, but then would also get the 5.4" in September if it ends up being even smaller.

Same. I have a 7 that I got in 2016. Will wait to see what September brings. If smaller sized phones are all still +$1000 I'll probably get this.

Yeah, when will Mercedes make cars with round headlights again? When are they going to realize not everyone wants cars with these amorphous slithers as headlights? We also want a handbrake between the front seats.

It’ll probably be 750 x 1334 just like the iPhone 6.
We know how Apple likes to reuse spare parts from older models.
