I'm well aware of what the regulation says.

Which is terrible for the environment as wireless charging is extremely inefficient. This goes against EU's reasoning for the USB-C mandate which is supposedly for the environment. It's also bad for the environment since billions of cables were sold just to switch over from lightning for the few years it had a USB-C port. It would have been better to either ban wireless upfront or to let Apple stay on lightning and then go portless in a few years.

Either way, EU is doing an awful job for the environment here.

It's also for consumer convenience.

Same outcome had Apple stayed on lightning for another few years. But now we've spent an extra billion on producing USB-C cables and releasing tons of emissions for nothing.
Those factories would be releasing those same emissions no matter what. I'm all for reducing these types of emissions but with fossil fuel power causing close to 90% of all emissions, I'll save my ire for them.

You mean when they were trying to mandate micro-usb? They should probably stay out of these things since they lag so far behind.
Of course.

They shouldn't touch the design of any product. But if they did, they should have at least done it before a billion devices adopted something.

Well it's more with USB-C. When iPhone goes portless, that's extra billions of USB-C cables going into the drawer not being used at all vs just keeping the lightning port and removing the cable from the box.

In good time. There's probably more inventory to sell off of Lightning-based Mac accessories. I suspect no new ones will be made with Lightning. So as inventories thin out, USB-C versions will be announced. Apple knows how to maximize every cent. They spend like every penny counts but charge like we consumers should "think (VERY) different" about that. ;)
What exactly are you suggesting that Apple did wrong?
What exactly are you suggesting that Apple should have done instead?
What are you suggesting is wrong with the slogan?

What is EU going to do with portless phones?
One account of the directive from the EU parliament says:

Regardless of their manufacturer, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earbuds and laptops that are rechargeable via a wired cable, operating with a power delivery of up to 100 Watts, will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port. (https://multimedia.europarl.europa.eu/en/package/common-eu-charger_20301)

...suggesting that a wireless-only device wouldn't be affected

I’ve wonder: what about Mac accessories? The Magic Mouse, trackpad, and keyboard all still use lightning connectors. It makes even less sense on the Mac and just odd they haven’t updated them yet.
If I had to guess, when they update the iMacs they’ll switch those to USB-C. The iMac color-matched accessories probably make up most of the SKUs for those items.

I suspect Apple will do a clean sweep up date.

The only thing I wonder is for the stock still in stores. The poor unsuspecting people who get screwed out of the same money for a lighting one (they won’t go on sale).

You’ll be able to use the Apple return policy to bring back a lightning device if the USB-C ones come out within two weeks. In either case, it’s not the worst thing that can happen, if you are “stuck” with a device with lightning.

My thought was more the unsuspecting buyers who don’t understand the difference.

If they design a new usb-c connector for the Magic Mouse but put it on the bottom again the internet will explode.
90% guaranteed it will be on the bottom. That is an on-purpose design decision to avoid people trying to use it corded just because the box contains the mouse and a cord.

The other 10% possibility is that they put the port on the front, so people at least have something new to complain about on the internet.

Since I am still on the OG Airpod Pro model, this will be a good upgrade if true. While I love and respect the timing and what Lighting brought to us, I am over it now as effectively everything Apple, PC, my cameras, other devices are now USB-C.

So are they gonna release just the AirPods and AirPods Pro cases with USB-C?

Not that it really matters much, because of Qi/MagSafe charging…
More like AirPods sold from certain date moving forward will sport usb-c, plus the cases that are available for sale separately. It will probably just be a single bullet point on the slide, assuming nothing else changes about them. This is purely for people with existing AirPods who desire usb-c on their charging cases.

I'm happy with this news. I recently got the AirPods Pro 2 for my birthday, fortunately with lightning connector. I'm happy I don't need to have both lightning and USB-C connectors in every spot where I don't want to charge my devices. In due time, when I upgrade to an iPhone with USB-C, I'll have to bite the bullet.
I’m also fine with the lightning case of my APP2 for now. Someday, I’ll have a USB-C iPhone and a USB-C case with the third generation AirPods Pro using the same cable, but today it wouldn’t be convenient. The only Apple device I currently have with a USB-C port is my third generation Apple TV 4K which rarely needs to get charged with the braided USB-C to USB-C cable I had to buy.
