While Apple customers in the United States have the option to replace their Apple Watch battery for a battery service fee of USD 79 places like India do not have a battery replacement option. Indian customers have to replace the whole unit and are forced to pay USD 349 nearly 5x the cost of USD 79 just because Apple isn’t bothered to setup similar service options world wide.

https://support.apple.com/watch/repair/service/pricing

The most frustrating part is that Apple has been selling the watch in India for over 5 years and continues to be least bothered of setting up basic service options.

So essentially once the battery gets depleted you’d be better off throwing away your watch in India rather than getting service.

Every customer should have the basic right to replace the battery which is a consumable at a reasonable cost. When devices cost the same or more globally customers have a right to same service levels. Else Apple should add a disclaimer of non replaceable batteries at the time of sale in non-US markets.

Great way to force customers to upgrade and create e-waste. Guess Apple doesn’t really care of customers or the environment unless the law forces them to care.

UPDATE - As on March 29th, 2022, Apple has taken feedback from Indian consumers into consideration and has started offering battery replacements for Apple Watch where battery health less than 80%. Instead of the near-new cost that Authorized service centers were asking from customers for battery replacements, I have been offer a much-reduced cost of Rs 8272 in Mumbai which is equivalent to the USD 79 battery service cost globally. I am glad Apple has come around and revised their policy on battery replacement in India. Thank you, Apple for playing fair.

For out of warranty there is no option to to replace the battery only in India. The service centres only provide an option to replace the entire unit for a much higher cost almost equivalent to buying a new watch.

All the options for service fee are in warranty period only. Battery service is mostly required after 2 years of ownership.

Your definition of discriminatory is way off.. Apple can offer whatever services or support they see fit and are allowed under the country's laws they're operating in. Europe, U.K., Australia all get 2 or more years warranty where as U.S. and other places only get one year is that discrimination too?
The 2 year warranty is required by consumer law In Europe and apple charges more than US for that.

The point here is out of warranty service options should be available to all equally across the world where apple runs business for profit. Expecting to to able to replace a consumable battery for a reasonable cost in a device sold by Apple isn’t too much to ask for.

Also in Europe battery replacement isn’t avalaible, also in warranty.
I’ve changed 7 Apple Watch 2 Edition (ceramic) and 2 Apple Watch 2 Stainless Steel in november/december 2021 and noone not in AppleCare department in Ireland not in Apple Support online (chat/calls) or offline (Apple Store and Premium Resellers) know about that.
Mine Apple Watch 2 are new, in warranty, with AppleCare+, and for change battery or upgrade WatchOS EVERY SINGLE TIME I’ve receveid a new one.
If I’ll pay for every Edition replacement it cost 881,20€ every time, ‘cause for the company an Apple Watch 2 in ceramic or an Apple Watch 5 in ceramic cost ever 881,20€.
Also in Italy (as in the rest of Europe) you can read about “battery replacement service for Apple Watch” at 79€, but simply they don’t make it.
Also AppleCare contract change every 2 days, 1 week, 3 weeks, 3 months.
With Italy rules it seems like scam, but noone stop them.

Why? Because you feel you're entitled?

Got some bad news for you - the world is a very unfair place and there's alot more than silly batteries to worry about on the global scale.

Let’s not get personal.

When you sell a product for profit you should also have all relevant service options. Else best to warn customers of non-replaceable batteries at the time of purchase.

It’s about the right to repair a device owned by you which only has a battery problem. Surely not about entitlement.

At least Apple puts up a official cost of €79 for battery replacement. In India they don’t have a prescribed battery replacement cost outside warranty.

Explain how that would change this situation.

There are plenty of places in India that will replace Apple watch batteries once the warrenty has expired.
Because the existence of these laws puts pressure on the vendors to make components readily available for purchase. This in turn leads to increased competition among repair shops to provide battery service, and the repair price drops.

Should a private company be forced to manufacture and supply parts?

How many watch batteries should apple be forced to make? How many should they be forced to stock?

Why all the drama? That apple link explicitly says that out of warranty battery service is available for a fee.
If you read the post - that fee is equivalent to replacing the whole unit and not only the battery. Hence the forced upgrades and e-waste

They should have a similar policy for all countries. Allowing replacements for a lower fee in some and forcing other countries to replace their whole unit. Else put a disclaimer Of non-replaceable watch batteries at the point of sale.

Can confirm that is not the case in India. You'll have to pay for the entire unit to be replaced. Apple service in India is garbage. I'll give you two more examples other than the Apple Watch - To get the MacBook batteries replaced, you have to pay for the entire bottom housing to be replaced - including the keyboard. If your phone's ear piece malfunctions, they'll charge to get the entire screen replaced, along with the earpiece. These two are from my first hand experience. I'm pretty sure there's more such things out there. I'll add another unethical example that really pissed me off. My iPhone 12 Pro Max had a poor quality battery which was at 80% a month before a year, and Apple service centers refused to acknowledge there was a problem and replace it. Unfortunately for me, it fell to 79% a day after my warranty expired, that is, 366 days of ownership. Garbage luck and trash product, but alright. I paid for a full battery replacement service, which they did, and they damaged the corners of my phone's stainless steel edges near the screen, and they said it was inevitable. I've seen customers in the US get a new phone for much less, so I agree with the OP's point.

You mean one should rely on cheap, third party parts and replacement once the 'warrenty' of an Apple Watch expires? Will Apple compensate you if a third party battery explodes on your wrist or causes damage to your house? They should not sell products unless they can service it, espeically when it comes to the battery, since it can be a real hazard.

Why you bought it without checking?

But the service isn't available, so it became a scam (you try to sell something you don't own).

Yes, a private company could be force to manufacture and supply parts, also 'cause they sell the service but they doesn't make it.

Apple's probably complying with consumer protection laws of each market.

If you want equal protection then ask your Indian law makers to copy paste best practices elsewhere.

I've read racist remarks MR that AppleCare+ isn't offered in countries like ours but the truth is the market may not be big enough to support it much less have laws that makes it competitively possible.

To help get your thread some visibility you may want to prefix the title with "Apple India: Discriminatory Service Policies"

In the UK and US etc. when you have a battery “serviced” for a watch or iPad etc. the whole unit is replaced with a refurb.
That’s Apple’s call on how they choose to service it. US / UK has the option for battery service at a lower cost $79 / €79 - than the rest of the world which has to pay 5x that amount as there is no option to replace the battery only.

I checked but nowhere on their site in India they mention that battery service and replacement out of warranty will cost as much as replacing the entire Unit which is inconsistent in what is being offered in global markets
