I got my 4S on launch day. I just checked the apple app for eligibility and its saying I'm not eligible for an upgrade until May 2013. I don't understand? I have bought the iPhone every year on launch day since the first one in 2007. What gives?

They got rid of the 12 month upgrades. It's every 20 months now.

That's exactly how it was last year. Hopefully AT&T allows pre-orders from their site using no-commitment pricing.

I wonder if you will be able to call in an order from Apple. Sometimes they do things that they don't advertise.

Their video makes it sound like you can. They call it "Upgrading at Full Price"

I think the OP is terribly confused. I have a 4S and will pay 550 for my 32GB Black iP5. It is not full price. See it is 250 plus the cost of the subsidized iphone. Maybe you should correct that in the initial post so people dont get confused and upset!

Just called apple care and the lady I spoke said, at this time nobody knows weather you can pre order paying full price, or not. She also spoke with her supervisor and she said nothing has been confirmed one way or another. Just passing this on.

You're buying a subsidized upgrade that incurs a $250 AT&T fee. That's not full price, and has nothing to do with my thread lol.

Wow really? So people who bought iPhones on the last launch day are now stuck huh?

Most people are, I believe. I bought mine launch day, not eligible for full upgrade until May 2013. Heck, I can't even get the partial upgrade until November of this year. I will either be doing an upgrade swap or paying full price. Most likely, full price route.

But this is crazy! I have been on AT&T forever. I have gotten a new iPhone every year on launch date and now they change it!? Can't we start some type of petition or something. I'm dead serious.

They changed the policy. Yearly upgrades are done.

I don't need it to be factory unlocked, as I use AT&T compatible sims from Straight Talk... so do you folks know if I can buy a full price 5 from Apple/AT&T or am I going to have to wait for an unlocked one? Since it doesn't need to be unlocked the only thing keeping me from buying one launch day is Apple most likely wanting me to have an AT&T account when I go to purchase.

Any ideas?

You signed the contract to agree to the terms. There's always the ETF.

Love the "What?! I've done this every year" people. My coworker is convinced he's going to get it early upgrade. I'm making no bones about paying the $450. Sold the 4S for a decent price, so I'm cool with that. I just want to be able to purchase it on launch day.

I have paid $199 every year. What's there to "like"?

No by full price I mean, carrier locked, unsubsidized phones. Such as for one who may be in the middle of a contract with no upgrades.

How would one buy a phone mid contract and not have it be full price?

Three reps I spoke to, including one from Apple Care told me no full price pre-orders. Not sure what to tell you.

could the reps be mistaken? how could they refuse $$

You can buy it at full price if and only if you are not eligible for any upgrade at all, I believe. I mean, how else will you get it? I think OP means you do not have the option to buy it at full price even if you have an upgrade available since Apple automatically defaults to the lowest price.

yeah i think this is what is happening, Full price if you are eligible for ZERO subsidy otherwise you are REQUIRED to take the subsidy, full or partial. for pre orders

Am pretty sure you will be fine. I doubt apple would disallow people to buy the iphone every year on launch day. that doesn't sound right. per the other poster, whatever the lowest price is, you can only pay that price.

Well anyway for those who care I posted on AT&Ts Facebook about the upgrade policy. Maybe those who care can like it and we can get something going or maybe not. I posted under the name Colt.

Didn't both the 4 and 4S offer the factory unlocked version months after launch? So that's not just one iPhone launch.

Yes, other countries have iPhones available on day 1 because they're launch dates are later than the US's.

At the time of the iPhone 4's launch, it was Apple's policy to not sell unlocked phones in the US period (probably because it was still an AT&T exclusive at that point). It was only late 2011 that Apple changed that policy. The 4S was the first new release after that policy change.

I think there must be miscommunication between the OP and the Apple reps he spoke with. I cannot fathom why someone who is *forced* to pay full price for a *locked* phone (not someone wanting to buy a factory *unlocked* phone) would be turned away at pre-order. That makes zero sense. What difference would it make to them whether your purchase is being subsidized or not?

If this turns out to be true (again, it makes zero sense) I guess I'll be adding a line.

I have the same problem? A couple of times, I had to pay the early upgrade (+$250) premium, but never had to pay full retail. Not sure what's up with them this year.

AT&T used to offer yearly upgrades for accounts where the monthly bill was >$100/month. Some time last year they made it so that every account is only eligible for an upgrade every 20 months regardless of the cost of the plan. So anyone who upgraded to the 4S has to wait 20 months for the next upgrade.

If you goto apple.com now and check your upgrade eligibility that is the price you will probably pay when you try at midnight tomorrow. Whether its full or partial or zero subsidy. For an unlocked one, definitely not until it launches in all countries(ie china) to prevent all the iphone vultures for making a profit.

The OP is WRONG. I've spoken to several reps in the last few minutes who confirmed that the phone can be bought at full price. Not unlocked, but full price. I'm on Verizon, I don't want to use my upgrade and lose unlimited data, so I will preorder at the $749 price for the 32GB.

I sure hope this is correct. I really want to be able to pre-order at the full price. Don't really care if it's unlocked per se but I really don't want to extend my contract.
