A couple of quick points:

- Existence of at least two sites, touchmods.net and ipodtouch4all.com, to tout this product. The latter is a shill, though purports to not be part of the development team, "only a very loyal supporter." There's only a couple non-touchmods posts on the site. Also, one of the posts criticizes TUAW for not covering the development more.

- The NUMEROUS appeals for donations and encouragements to pre-order. A legit operation wouldn't be so fervently trying to get money up front.

- The lovely rounded numbers chosen -- 'first 500' to pre-order, then the 'first 1000.' Why cap it? Why choose such convenient numbers?

- World-wide shipping 'included' with your pre-order payment? That's quite convenient: makes you reach for your credit card and think, 'oh what a great deal!' instead of, 'uhh, does that make financial sense?'

I'll concede, I could be wrong. I hope I am, for the several hundred people who have allegedly pre-ordered. I hope you get a decent product, or at least your money back.

Well, I can understand your point however, I am the owner of ipodtouch4all and let me just state that my site is new and still under development. You will see changes on my site in the next week or so. The reason that I choose to report on the touchmods team is that I truly believe in them.
I do not know what more that I need to do to prove to you or that I even should. Again, I am only relaying information that I see people would want to know.
I know they are real. I have one of their first mics and I know that the product is real. I speak with one of the members of the team quite frequently. The one that I have been talking with, I know directly where to contact him. He works at an institute of technology. This I know because I have called him many times at his work. Also, these guys are doing this with no capital. Yes, they need supporters to keep things going. And if a donation helps then, their is nothing wrong with that. The donations for the mic itself is a different ball game. That is totally separate from regular donations and you are not asked to pay for the mic until the product is ready. What is wrong with that? That is the way any service works. When your product is ready to ship. You pay for it. I really do not know of many companies anymore that will take payment when the product arrives.
Point is
1. You are not forced to pay for the mic in advance. Only when you receive an email that it is ready to ship.
2. Donations are donations and not to be mistaken with the payment of the mic. Donations outside of the payment for the mic are merely as stated donations.

I can promise you one thing. If their product was a scam, I would be the first to blast this on every forum that I have. I have my own reputation to worry with. If I didn't believe in something or was not 100% sure that product was real I would not back it all. Period.

I am truly sorry that you feel this way. I guarantee that you will soon retract your words as their first shipment of mic will ship soon, if not already and you see that people have their mic.

whew, for 45 bucks id rather wait for a mic from griffin or belkin (whoever makes it) that i can just go pick up at a store. props though!

I've already bought one, and hope it comes!

The problem then is if I will be able to use it, as I m waiting to send my iPod Touch back to Apple for a replacement. I just hope that either someone hacks 1.1.3 or that my new iPod has 1.1.2!

I received my mic from the Touchmods folks today. I prepaid a few weeks ago and requested one of the hand-built models, simply because I wanted to own a little piece of "history."

They shipped it out on Friday (from Austria) and I received it just 4 days later here in Japan.

I'm quite pleased with it. The sound quality isn't outstanding, but it's pretty darn good. My first VOIP phone call was a complete success.

I'm eager to know how the machine-built mics turn out, and whether they perhaps sound even better than the hand-built models.

In any case, I'm pleased with my purchase, and with the customer service provided by the folks who run Touchmods.

like omg

now all I need is a pocket EVDO to wifi converter or something like that and i'm good to go with a "cell phone...."

LOL do those things exist?

... ... ... Dude ...
No offense ... but you are way behind.
Those firmwares were hacked a looong time ago.

I suggest updating to 2.0.2 and jailbreaking with winpwn/pwnagetool.
