According to 9to5Mac, Apple "had plans" to introduce high-end versions of the Mac mini with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, but these plans were "probably scrapped" in favor of the Mac Studio, with Apple instead opting for an M2 refresh.

Prior rumors suggested a future Mac mini could get a redesign with a smaller chassis, a plexiglass like top, and two-tone color options.

I do hope that the M1 Pro and 32GB are BTO options on this refreshed Mac mini so it can act as a bridge to the Mac Studio.

Perhaps they were wrong and the M1 Ultra is the M2? I mean, did anyone see the M1 Ultra coming?

Yes.

Mark Gurman leaked it some time ago by its codename - Jade2C-Die. One the M1 Max was released and the ability to link two together was discovered, it's been generally accepted that Apple would combine two M1 Max into a single SoC - what we now know as M1 Ultra.

The lack of a mac mini release in favour of the mac studio was quite a clear statement.
It's pretty obvious Apple will unify the mini lineup with a single M2 chip option (maybe an M2 Pro), similarly to how the 27" iMac/iMac Pro was scrapped in favour of having just one iMac model (even though I fully expect a 27" version one day).
I actually like seeing Apple simplifying the lineup like this, and the mac studio is the perfect middle ground between the mini and the pro, the perfect option for power users.
Having an M2 Pro option for the mac mini would create a perfectly scaled hierarchy of desktop machines, each one for a specific target.
Exciting times!
Are they going to skip the M1 Pro and M1 Max for the Mini? Will the M2 be more advanced than the M1 Pro and M1 Max? I'm not into the weeds on the details of chip manufacturing, and not complaining about the new performance boosts, but it kinda seems like it's all over the place?

With the discontinuation of the 27 inch iMac, now I can’t wait for the M2 iMac 24 inch (please offer 32gb of ram) to replace my aging 27 inch iMac since the M2 will be a beast compared to the i5 I have now.

Each M2 will be more powerful than the M1 version it replaces.

So M2 will be a general purpose. Faster single-core but not as fast multi-core compared to the M1-Pro or M1-Max. Still focused on good battery life.

The M2-Pro/Max will be the higher performance versions of the M2.

And of course the M2-Ultra will be like two M2-Maxes.

I would expect them to design a new “mini” chassis for the Pro/Max with optimized thermals… so probably M2 timeframe whenever that is

I think they will.
We're sure the next base Mac Mini will have the M2 and I don't see Apple still marketing the M1 Pro/Max chips alongside it.
I can see Apple either having the M2 only or also an additional M2 Pro variant available at day one.
The M2 won't be any more powerful than the M1 Pro/Max, as it's "just" the next iteration of the previous series of chips, therefore it'll be the entry level option.
That said I expect the chip to be a bit more advanced, therefore each chip from the M2 family will perform better than the same chip from the M1 series.

They are suggesting that the new m2 will have same number of cpu cores as the m1 with 2 added gpu cores. I don't think this makes a huge difference to what we have. It seems like a worthless upgrade from an m1 to me. if they had something more substantial like 10 cpu cores and 16 gpu cores I could consider that.

Didn't you know? They are never wrong. Their predictions are just delayed or going to release later.

[note the sarcasm]

These aren't phones, people don't need to upgrade their computers every generation. People with Intel computers who waited out the M1 will think its a great upgrade, and people with M1s will think the M3s are great upgrades.

I can just see this in a year or so… when they keep these computers in the lineup but marked down… similar to iPhones. Making it a price to performance that nobody can beat…

From what I'm hearing, folks are pretty impressed with what even an M1 Mini can do now, and then the M1 Pros or Ultra in the Studio … at some point it seems a Mini that is too hot-rodded will cannibalize Mac Studio sales? Not complaining about option though. :)

I wonder if the M2 will be 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores like the M1 or if it will take after the Pro and Max and be 8 performance and 2 efficiency or maybe 6 performance and 2 efficiency?

If this ends up being on the level of the M1 Pro with 32GB Ram (or possibly 64 GB) options, it will sell very well. This is because we have no true prosumer desktop Mac now. Only the consumer M1 and professional Max/Ultra.

I expect the formula to remain the same. No reason o sacrifice great battery life on the general-purpose computers when they have the Pro/Max chips.

I was really hoping they'd release the Mac mini with the M1 Pro. Now I'm kicking myself for not just buying the mini when they originally released the M1 version. On the plus side, the used price and inventory is probably gonna be in my favor in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed for a 512/16 for around $600. That should tide me over for a good while.

if anything its reverse. why would you want to upgrade your phone every year. how often do you say my iPhone or iPad is too slow I need to upgrade. People push their home computers with real operating systems much harder than phones and need more frequent updates. the only real benefit of a new phone is a new camera and even now the cameras are so good it hardly matters anymore.

M1 Max in the studio, not the Pro…
I think there is a space for something between the low end studio and the current mini…
