:mad::mad::mad:

I have been using my 27" Cinema Display monitors for about 3 hours now and my eyeballs feel like they are on fire. :(

There are no reflections in my office only an overhead light that is slightly dimmed. I have played with the brightness on these monitors and it seems like the less brighter I make them, the hard the screen is to read. The brighter I make them, the harder my eyes hurt.

on another forum someone said they could not look at LED backlit monitors ? and googling they found out its a common thing with eye strain and headache ?

might google it ? bummer for ya though :( no fun to get something and its not good

since you turned down the brightness that was my first thought ? calibrate it to about 120 cdm/2 if you can get ahold of a puck and software ?

Add me to the mix...

Congrats Desmo! you will adjust to the brightness and where your comfort zone is after a few days and some tweaking with the settings control panel. i have them set relatively low but have it set to auto adjust from that point. when i first got them setup it felt like my eyes were bleeding into my skull because they're set to about 75% out of the box. i now have them at about 40% and it's perfect for me.

just make sure you're not leaning too close to the monitors to read smaller text. that will create both eye-strain and an uncomfortable distance between your eyes and the screens which will surely lead to an unpleasant experience. sit back, make your text larger if needs be, and keep tweaking the brightness. you'll find the sweet spot for your eyes and the room you're in.

nice looking setup! what are the specs of your MacPro?

Desmo,

I like your desk with the thick clear glass. What brand is it and where did you acquire it?

dmoon

The desk is from Crate and Barrel. The model is Strut. It is a 70" wide desk. The glass table top is 5/8" thick and weights in at a hefty 250 lbs.

It is a great piece I like it very much.

Well, as much as I wanted to like the 27" displays, I am returning them for the 30" displays. I played around with them all day and they just do not offer a good balance for what I use my machine for. The matte display is just much easier. No matter how much I adjust the displays my eyes feel like they are having to work. Where as the 30" matte feels natural.

It is a real shame too, because I really cannot believe how great the speaker sounded, in addition the built-in microphone was very clear and picked up my voice better than I expected. I just cannot deal with the gloss. :(

I cannot believe for the life of me, Apple just did not reduce the size of the bezel, make it Aluminum in color, square of the corners and call it a evolution of the original Cinema Displays. I understand from an economics stand-point using economies of scale with the design essentially already established in the 27" iMac.

For those inquiring the specifications of my Mac Pro are the following:

6-Core 3.33 Ghz
3 GB RAM
1 x Intel 160 GB SSD for OS and Applications
3 x Western Digital RE3 1 TB Hard Drives
2 x ATI 5770 Video Cards
2 x Samsung DVD +/- RW with LightScribe
-Wireless Keyboard
-Magic TrackPad
-Magic Mouse

Still searching for a UPS solution, I think I like the looks of that CyberPower one that was just posted....

Nice setup, but you should think about upgrading the RAM in your Mac Pro too, 3GB is really too little. :(

Also I prefer glossy displays, so I am really happy with my 27 inch. I would be sad if Apple went with another matte, because I would end up buying a display from someone else. I just hate how every matte coating these days creates this weird "sparkly" effect that I can very easily see when sitting at the display. I like how precise the display looks with the glossy. Glare is not an issue for me.

Hi Ovrlrd,

Thanks for the heads up on the RAM... That will be my next purchase. I buy everything from OWC (macsales.com). I am just waiting for them to carry the Samsung branded 1333 MHz ram. Then I will drop 12 GB or 24 GB RAM in there.

Regarding my personal views on the new 27" Cinema Display... I really, really like the design. As a matter of fact I love everything about the new Cinema Display. It just at the end of the day, I am more concerned about the health of my eyes than anything else. I can get by for 1-2 hours, as I tested it last night with a myriad of settings (i.e. brightness, calibrations, etc.). However, in the end, my eyes just hurt too much. I wish they didn't for several reasons...

I could of saved my self $1800 extra today to buy a 2nd 30". Plus I do not have built-in speakers, iSight or a microphone. Now I have to find the three peripherals which is just going to add more clutter to my desk. I like the minimalist approach.

Fortunately, I found an old iSight on Craigslist that is brand new. So I should be good on an all in one. Then I think I am going to invest in a Bose SoundDock 10 and stream audio via Bluetooth. I guess the SoundDock 10 has a Hi-Fi ADP profile with its bluetooth adaptor which will suffice for the office. Anyways here is thew new setup...

That was a no brainer.
As for BOSE = Buy Other Sound Equipment. Go KEF, you wont regret it.

Psssshhhhh KEF :p Seriously for Hi-fi (and I won't go on a rant about how from a recording engineers perspective hi-fi nuts are weird and wrong on many things) it's B+W, PMC, Quested or nothing. :p :D

Well, if he's going to buy BOSE them it's better to have a look at KEF. Ok, if you're recording them it's better to have a look at B&W or Focal or M-Audio for studio monitors. Again, if he's looking at Bose that means he's looking for consumerish grade speakers. Even them, he was happy with the built in speakers on the led 27

my home stuff is NAD and PSB for speaks

my computer has M-Audio BX5 though a edirol unit and for headphones
Denon D2000 :)

I kinda like nicer sounding stuff since I like listening to music etc.. when working

so I hear the others on nice stuff :)
