I doubt competition is going to force Apple's hand. Tablets are essentially internet appliances, and the Apple branding, software and app store are the selling points, not the hardware specs.

No, not going to happen. 2011 = year of iPad 2.

They could easily add another version to the iPad 2 line (iPad 2 HD, iPad 2 Pro, iPad 2R - for retina) and still continue to sell the iPad 2 as the main product in the current line.

I don't think so. Look at the iPod and how it evolved. The iPhone will get another model soon and the iPad will in a year or two, maybe 3.

I really doubt it (seems like it is going to be an annual cycle), and it won't make my iPad any less functional. Although if it happened, it could get original iPad users who haven't upgraded to do so.

This is what I'm banking on and one of the reasons I didn't update to that bogus iPad 2 with dual cameras.. *yawn*

iPad 3 will be the next BIG thing!

I haven't read the rest of the posts here, but I do believe we'll see a new model of the iPad this year. My speculation is as good as anyone else's here, but I'll give my reasoning.

This iPad 2 can have 2 relatively 'easy' upgrades (I use the term 'easy' loosely because I have no idea how these things are made) - those being the cameras & the retina display. I think Apple could easily upgrade these two and probably will this year because of the competition i.e. samsung galaxy tab sporting a 5mp camera.

I'm sorry, but if you think Apple is driven to update the iPad 2 six months after its release because the Galaxy Tab has a 5 mp camera, then you really don't understand Apple, nor do you understand just how much of a lead the iPad 2 has over the competition. It's not about raw specs. The iPad 2 is the total package. Some of the competitors have a few technical advantages but the total package they offer frankly stinks compared to the iPad 2. Apple couldn't care less about them.

I strongly believe that, if Apple offers any new iPads in 2011, they will be an addition to the iPad 2 line and will not be better than the top-of-the-line iPad 2 available now. And regardless of the competition, they will sell as many as they can possibly manufacture.

I think everyone assumes that a new iPad would not co-exist with the current one. iPod's have 4 varieties? It seems very reasonable that the next iPad will carry a better display (larger?), and this allows them to launch it as iPad Pro.

Launching it as another variation allows them to jack up the price even more, and perhaps only carry it at the largest storage option. There's so many ways to milk more money from willing customers. I see no reason why any of this is precluded because the iPad 2 was just released.

People may not remember this but rumors of the next iPhone/iPad have been out there since the 1st iPhone was released

It won't happen as Apple will want to keep it at the minimum 1 year in between

Some are speculating this will be the year of iPad 2 with the release of an HD model towards the end of the year. But again, these are speculations.

I generally agree with what you are saying, but there are moves being made by Amazon (Android App Store), Google (Honeycomb), and B&N (nook color update), as well a some who have not yet tipped their hand, that could dramatically alter the tablet landscape 3-6 months from now.

Apple is fully aware of those moves and is planning on how (or if) to combat those moves. There was a reason why Apple felt the need to release the iPad 2 a mere 11 months after the iPad 1.

I think it would reasonably upset too many iPad 2 owners. I mean, is there any precedent in this industry for an update like this occurring so soon?

Other manufactures release things fairly often. I think it was 7 months between the Droid 1 and Droid 2 release for Moto. Technology gets old fairly quickly now a days. You keep up or get left behind. That being said, NO NO NO NO NO there will not be a iPad 3 this year. Anyone waiting for it or expecting it is sorely mistaken.

I agree that they need to be mindful of the competition, but so far the competition has given them no reason to need to make drastic moves to "keep up". I expect everything Apple has done and is doing has been largely according to a well thought out plan.

Let's be real here:

Android App Store is perhaps equivalent to the iOS App Store about six months after it launched (2008). It's a good start but they have a LOT of catching up to do. They are also competing against several other app stores on the same platform.

Honeycomb is very nice in a number of ways, but it is buggy, incomplete, and not intuitive for the non-technical consumer. It also has a grand total of 17 tablet-optimized apps at last check.

Nook is a fancy e-book reader. It doesn't belong in this discussion.

Apple is not sweating anything here.

One with a better display is what I was thinking. They will not introduce a whole new iPad.

The entire front of the iPad is the display. How does this not qualify as a "whole new iPad?" I'm guessing you're saying the body won't be redesigned, but how often does that happen? Macs get uber redesigns maybe once every few years. Apple keeps messing with the iPhone, but take a look at the iPad 2 and it's a very large first-gen iPhone! Most of those redesigns seem to be to fix flaws, then new ones are created, etc. etc.

I seriously doubt some new model is going to drop with just a better screen. If Apple figures it out, it would require either more power from a CPU or GPU and maybe a battery that's slightly larger. Plop a retina display on the iPad 2 and you've probably got at least 25 percent battery life drop based on the extra CPU usage. Apple isn't going to want to do that.
