Is there a way to just download the universal upgrades for macs once and apply it to multiple machines. I have three macs in the house and it is quite time consuming when each has to download 1gb updates that are the same thing.

ThumbDrive.

Software Update has a option to download updates in the background. When the update is ready it will ask your if you want to install it.

Also if your running Lion, Apple now does delta updates. So they should be quite a bit smaller then in past OS X versions.
