$135 pre-installed 4GB ram by Apple > $135+ aftermarket 4GB ram.

Why not just order your MB with 4GB ram? It's only $135 now compared to $200 for the previous generation...

Actually, it's $122 for the 4GB (2x2GB) of Crucial ram I ordered from NewEgg. Plus, I have the 2x1GB sticks of ram left over after the process that I can sell.

In the macbook service manual, it says that 200-pin memory modules are used to upgrade the memory. however, all the memory i see are 204-pin. do you guys think it will still be compatible.

does anyone know if i go and buy it at the apple store would they have the 4gb configurations in stock or would they charge me extra to buy and install the ram there?

Get your ram from Apple, it seems to be cheaper and it would be covered by AppleCare too. :)

$135 for 4gb of ram and Apple warranty seems like a great deal!

It's really $135 for an additional 2GB. It already comes with 2GB.

Ya but it's not like they just throw another 2GB stick in there... They have to replace the 2 1GB sticks with 2 2GB sticks. I guess the only downside to upgrading via Apple is that you don't have spare memory laying around to sell... I'd rather spend an extra ten bucks and have it already installed than tear open my brand new MB... but that's just me.

True, you do get to keep your old ram. But, Apple ram is covered by the 1-warranty and afterward when you get AppleCare.

It comes with two 1gb sticks - they upgrade it with two 2gb sticks.

Who would want to buy 2 one GB sticks of DDR3 RAM? Everybody has that standard, unless it works for some windows machines I guess. What could people do on a Macbook that would require 8 GB of RAM in it?

I will wait off on buying RAM from Apple as it makes it BTO and you can not return it outright should you have major problems. The Apple store I use is also a complete zoo and I really don't want to hang around for an hour while they get somebody to install it for me either. The price for having Apple do it now isn't too bad but after the hit I am taking on the computer. I prefer to spread the burden out, this is my way of justifying it. :)

As far as warranty on the RAM goes i think companies like Crucial offer much longer guarantees than Apple (some are life time if I am not mistaken) and you don't have to make a genius appointment.
