You'll do anything to justify that new Apple product, won't you?

Not at all. It's more like you will do anything to try and persuade others not to but it because you're not happy with its specs rather then let them make up their own mind. I don't need to justify anything. I'm quite happy with the specs of the new pro and even coming from an Air 2 think it's worthwhile upgrading.

I don't often comment here, as is evident from my posting history, but I do use these forums as a frequent source of info (community and "journalistic"), and I feel compelled to reply to this.

I've noticed that you've effectively hijacked every 9.7 iPP thread for your own means. While it may be argued that you're merely contributing to the forums as they are intended, I actually find them to be a disservice to the community and your arguements (if you are in fact genuinely trying to help). It's gotten to the point that your comments have become self-serving: a combination of passive aggressiveness, repition, and a complete distraction.

I especially find it funny that you attack other's behavior while failing to evaulate the means and methods you've used to voice your opinions. This particular comment is edpecially hypocritcal which is why I just had to interject.

I, myself, am somewhat disappointed in the device, and I check these threads in hopes of gaining OTHER'S thoughts. Unfortunately, you've effectively trolled every conversation as to render them almost useless.

If you are truly trying to be helpful, I'd suggest that you pay a little more time considering how you come off, as that is as important in communicating as the information that is presented itself.

Couldn't have said it better my self.

I have requested to have my preorder of the ipp 9.7 128gb cancelled.
Now I have the choice between the ipp 9.7 32gb ( I just don't need more) and the air 2.

I've read everyone's replies to this thread and still don't know what to do.
- I suck at drawing and don't need to take notes regularly besides the odd shopping list etc. So there is no need for pencil support.

- I don't need games and I usually only stream movies to my tv.

I would like to store a few kids episodes on the iPad for my little one.
I guess I should go for the air 2, but i am worried about future proofing (I don't plan on upgrading every year, more like 2-3yrs)
Can anyone help me make a decision? My brain feels fried.
I hate the term 'future proofing'. Like wtf does that mean? Are you asking for a device who's tech today will still be as good as the tech released three years from now? If so, that unicorn doesn't exist, if it did, they wouldn't release upgrades. Are you asking for a device that will still be highly functioning and not a useless brick in three years? If so, I think that is pretty much any apple device ever made. The iPad Air 1 is now two years and four months old. Is it as fast and awesome as the new pro will be, no. Can I still do pretty much everything I need to without much frustration, sure can! I'll be upgrading to the small size pro because the cost isn't really a factor for me but if it was a factor, I'd be fine continuing to use this iPad Air 1 for years to come (until Apple stops supporting it and then some)

I'm on the fence.....
I have the iPad-3rd generation, so I pretty much need to upgrade, but I can't decide if the Pro 9.7 is worth the additional expense, and am on the fence with upgrading to the iPad Air 2.

That said, the Air2 (64GB) costs $419 for a Refurb, and $489 at Macmall, whereas, the Pro 9.7 costs $594 at Macmall.

Not sure if buying the Air2 makes sense at those price points, and for $184 more I can get the latest model with the AX9 chip, which will ensure longer use before needing to upgrade again.

Oh well.....

You must excuse, English isn't my first language. Maybe future proofing was the wrong phrase.
I do wonder though how much lag there will be in a couple years or so.
I remember when I had my iPad 2, at one point the lag got so bad, that I rarely used it anymore and I seem to remember that it wasn't even that old then.

I'd stick with the iPad Pro, but I'm confused about the 2gb ram. Is the new processor that much better?

Just to add don't count on the refurb Air 2s happening. They've been going as fast as apple lists them on there website. Right now there are 3 wifi total, 2 16gb and 1 gold 64gb. And no cellular models. The stock hasn't changed in a few days so I assume they are out of refurb Air 2s right now too.

So really you are talking $95 difference.

Sorry, my post came off much more aggressive than I meant it. What I was trying to say is that you can't really go wrong with any of the current Apple iPads. They should all be holding up pretty well in three years, although they obviously won't have all the bells and whistles that the future ones will have. That being said, if you want the one that will hold up the best, go with the latest and greatest, the pro.

If you plan on keeping it awhile and want the best "future proofing" I would recommend going with the iPad Pro. It's got the faster A9X, 4 speakers, better screen, etc. I wouldn't worry about the 2GB of ram. I have a iPad Air with 1GB of ram and it runs just fine with IOS 9.3. So 2GB of ram will be fine. The bigger iPad Peo has 4GB of ram because it has a way bigger scree display that needs it, the smaller IP does not.

IMO, the processor is not going to be the item that gets dated first or makes the device feel old. It's will be the RAM most likely. If, and I said if... Apps keep getting fatter and fatter and require more resources then it's the memory that will be the choke point. I don't know what will happen in the future but I wouldn't spend the $184 bucks just for the processor. You had better have more reasons to upgrade like pencil support, the true tone screen, speakers, whatever. Just my take on it.

I went for the iPad Pro 9.7". Currently using an iPad Air.

Reasons the iPad Pro is better than iPad Air 2 to name a few:
- better screen tech (brightness, color gamut, non reflective)
- faster storage (folks are forgetting MVNE tech Apple put into A9X, one of the main reasons it flies in benchmarks)
- faster SOC
- much better speakers (4x2, louder)
- much better battery life (see Ars benchmarks)

Surely it costs more but one has to decide his/hers own cost-benefit analysis

If you're not interested in the pencil and keyboard, I would buy the air 2.

The statement 'I would like to store a few kids episodes on the iPad for my little one,' can quickly become 'many.' Most of the space on my 64Gb air 2 is taken up with kids shows. So, I would buy an iPad with sufficient storage.

I'll visit my local Apple Store this Thursday, because after reading too much about the ipp 9.7 and air 2, I'm completely unsure which one I should pick. I made a pro and cons list for both, but it's not helping haha
Thanks for your input though :)

Your obviously a casual user like me. Future proofing is impossible as stated above. The air 2 will more then likely become absolute around the same time as the IPP 9.7. The difference in the benchmarks make little difference in casual use such as video and streaming. With the recent price drop for the air 2 64 gb, your more then likely going to be better off with that for the foreseeable future. Just my recommendation. Unless you have extra money to burn for the latest and greatest then go ahead for the pro.

I upgraded because I wanted the Pencil. I also wanted to move from 64gb to 128gb since I was always bumping up against the ceiling on the 64gb model. I had planned to get Amazon credit for my Air2, but my gf wanted my Air2, so I had to pay the full price.

I do appreciate the wider color gamut, the extra speakers, faster speeds, true tone, etc... Even the camera is usable now. It is the first iPad with a good camera and typically it is the thing in my hands out on the deck and on the couch, so it is nice to get shots of things ( typically pups) without needing to go get my iPhone for most shots around the house. The screen is also less reflective and brighter which makes it better for outdoor use. 4K will also be nice, especially with the huge "viewfinder", once adapters come out make that it easier to attach to a tripod. My longer review is here, but the points above summarize my feelings on it.

That being said, the price is steep, so if you can't easily think of a reason to upgrade, might as well hold onto the money.

What's the point of recording in 4K without having a 4K screen to edit on?

After a lot of research, I finally ended up buying a 64GB Air 2. Got it at Target for $475 after 5% off with my Red Card. My local Costco had an Air 2 side-by-side with a Pro 9.7, and I was hard pressed to tell the difference in speed and screen quality. The Air 2 was fast, and the screen was colorful and beautiful. So was the Pro 9.7. So i went by Target and bought the Air 2 and haven't looked back. And I have $125 in my pocket and 64GB of ram, not 32 like I would have gotten with the $599 Pro. Of course, buy what you feel you need to buy. But definitely give the Air 2 a look before you jump into a Pro 9.7. It's still a worthy contender in the tablet market, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Over the years I have had plenty of video recording devices. I have never been concerned with whether their screens were up to the task of editing video. In fact, I have never edited video on those devices. Your question is like asking why anyone would want to use a DSLR or mirrorless camera to record video, or to shoot photos for that matter, if the viewfinder is too small for editing.

In other words, I don't need the iPad to be the beginning, middle, and the end of the process. I am mainly excited about the 4k recording feature. I plan to watch and probably edit the video on larger screens.... Nothing unusual, I have been using that same workflow for the iPhone/DSLR/mirrorless/etc for years.

As a side note, people are editing 4k on their iPads. I haven't done it, so I can't comment on the experience. However, I have edited photos in resolutions that exceed my monitor's specs and I am able to edit them just fine. My guess is that the iPad can edit 4k just fine and they will look great on a 4k monitor, but I don't have first hand experience in that just yet.

64GB of RAM? That's more then my iMac

Bravo on the purchase
