I dont about what the rules are, all I can do is share what our upgrade plan has been since the first iphone. We have family share plan, 750 min, two unlimited data plans and unlimited text. We have owned all the iphones, renewed in June at the 299 price for what ever the largest phone. I then sell our old iphones on craigslist. Been a great arrangement so far. So that family lines both dont get renewed is false at least in our case. But do admit we have great credit and we have never been late on a payment to them.

I dont understand how I have two iPhone 4s on my plan but yet it's saying I'm not eligible for 18 months?

I purchase the phones December 2010 and I'm the primary line

We got the 1400 min plan and of course 2GB internet and unlimited text messages

Wow I don't get how you Americans can afford things over there! $160USD is ridiculous! Although I did buy my iPhone outright so it is unlocked I'm on a plan that just now i pay 10GBP and I get 250 cross network anytime minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data with no fair use policy!

Back during the Great Depression the Entertainment industry is the one who thrived. I think (in the US at least) that no matter what (recession, etc.) we are going through, that will always remain true. (I consider the iPhone entertainment.)

So does AT&T's change of terms today block the early upgrade option? I was planning to buy an iPhone 5 on launch day, even if I have to pay the extra $200.

You just purchased the iPhone one month ago. Wait next month and IF you are the primary line on the family talk $89.99 voice plan ($80 primary voice plus $25 2GB data), you will see that your next full upgrade is 12/2011.

The system makes you wait a couple of months to adjust the upgrade dates. It's been just one month.

That's what I was wondering as well. I'm planning on upgrading, but really don't want to have to pay $800 to do so.

Weirdly enough, though I'm an authorized user on the account, I am not the primary. Our family bill is around $260 a month, and I was allowed to upgrade at the subsidized price for both the 3GS and 4 on launch day (and I didn't get one of the "bumps" in upgrade date--I was always listed as eligible before iP4 launch day). The message I'm getting now when I do the check-status-by-text option is: "A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 02/25/2012. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee, blah blah blah." Am I correct in assuming that means the std subsidized price + $200 option? I'd be cool with that, if so, as I kinda thought I was lucky to get the full subsidy on the iPhone 4.

Just one additional point- in my experience, and i have tinkered with my plan to find this out, they do seem to include the texting plan in whether an individual line is over $100 for purposes of a full upgrade. Like my current plan now is the 900 minute $59 voice, $30 unlimited data, and $20 unlimited texting, for my base before taxes and additional features of $109. This is a single individual line, and my upgrade screen shows that I will be eligible for a full discounted iphone upgrade on June 24, 2011.

And like I said, I tinkered with my plan several times to find out what would change the date and what wouldn't. Like for instance adding the navigation app for $9.99 per month doesn't do it. Adding other features like the car towing service doesn't. When I had the 450 minute $39 voice plan, that wasn't quite enough. It has to be OVER $100 per month in voice, data, and texting plans on an individual line.

I know ATT confuses the heck out of people. But this has been ATT/cingular's policy since I have been with them for the past 8 years. Nothing has change EXCEPT:

ATT has made "exceptions" for iPhone upgrades for Summer 2009, and Summer 2010.

My guess is that this happens again as they'll want to keep from bleeding subscribers to Verizon, particularly if iPhone 5 is a CDMA/GSM model.

My thinking is maybe not. If you think more about it, it seems like they did that in 2010 because they knew the Verizon iPhone was coming (they likely knew internally end of 2010/beginning of 2011 at the time), and they knew they would have a bunch of people up for either a discounted iPhone 4 or a cheap termination fee in December 2010 (the 3GS people were still on the old ETF remember), if they didn't get them into a new contract in June. That was very shrewd of them to offer that in 2010, but they don't have nearly as much reason to offer it in 2011. I guess we'll see.
