Data plans are tied to the sim card as is your phone number.
That's what I thought.
So there's no need to call ATT and worry about IMEI numbers? I assume you have been through this all before?

So, this is exactly what I want to do (getting 4S, have a 4, giving 4 to my wife who has a 3g) but I've seen so many people say that you need to call ATT so they can associate the proper number with the IMEI of the phone. Is there any truth to this? Are the data plans also tied to the SIM?

The issue is the new SIM card that they ship inside the new 4S is assigned to the number being upgraded. When you plug the iPhone into iTunes with the sim card inside of it, it will deactivate the old sim card which you are upgrading. This is a problem only if you are doing an upgrade swap, since you don't want the old sim deactivated.
I am in the same boat but could you do this?
- Move my existing iP4 sim card to the new iP4S.
- Turn on the iP4S and the new phone is yours
- Move NEW sim card to iP4
- Activate the new sim card via iTunes
My situation is a little different, I am on AT&T ip4 and my wife is on tmobile blackberry, I did the pre order ip4s and transfer her number to AT&T, when I receive the ip4s tomorrow, this is what I am planning to do
1. Activate her new ip4s with the new micro sim on itune, I believe once I do that, her old sim will be dead.
2. Swap my ip4 and her ip4s micro sim
3. Put her micro sim in a sim adapter and put it in her old blackberry.(That's what she prefer to use)
4. Call AT&T to drop the data plan on her blackberry
5. Have AT&T convert both line to family plan
Does it sounds right, I don't want to mess up my corporate discount and unlimited data plan. Thanks
Is the Blackerry a Tmobile blackberry? If so it's probably carrier locked, meaning you can't put an AT&T sim card in it.

But, if I just put my iPhone 4 SIM into the iPhone 4S before activating it, everything should be fine. Right?
Hi, I should probably be able to figure this out with the info in the thead, but I'm still not sure.
I have an iPhone 4 that I'm upgrading to a 4s. Then my wife (currently has a 3GS on a family plan) will get my 4. Should I use my old sim in the 4S, or use the sim that comes with the 4S? Then do I need to call AT&T to switch her number to the iPhone 4?
Thanks for your help!![]()
