Brand new MBA with 11.5, upgraded to 11.6 yesterday, big mistake. Cannot play DVDs using the native disk player. Downloaded VLC and Rosetta, no improvement. Can't play CDs or DVDs with attached superdrive. Anybody have any ideas, particularly to get VLC to work. I found the hidden location of the DVD preferences by sliding a disk into the superdrive and changed the prefs to open VLC when inserting a disc. But no improvement, can't play anything. I remember using VLC as a blu-ray substitute player but this MBA is completely unusable for playing any sort of disk-based media at the moment.

I'm on the Monterey beta 10 and can use the built-in DVD player on a commercial DVD with a superdrive alternative (a cheap Samsung I've had for at least 5 years). I don't use VLC so can't help with that part.

By the way, the location of the DVD player and some other apps is HD > System > Library > CoreServices > Applications. I keep an alias of that folder on my desktop, but some people just put the dvd player app into the dock.

Thanks but I can't find anything like that on this MBA. I did find CoreAnalytics but that's all. Anyway, you got me thinking and I re-accessed whatever media app I reconfigured to make the default operation be: open VLC when inserting a DVD. The way to get access to the actual "content" is to drag the Video_TS folder to the VLC window that says "drag media here" or something like that. Bingo, it plays fine. I still don't know where the DVD/CD preferences are, but I got the VLC to play media there I am.

Just use Spotlight and search for DVD player. Should pop up first on the list.

Salve, qualcuno ha riscontrato un problema con il lettore DVD mac?, all'avvio si chiude con la scritta "chiusura imprevista del lettore DVD". I have iMac 12,2 con OCLP

Do you have an Intel iMac or is it M1? The problem I had with my MacBook was that it was an M1 chip and after Apple released a patch for it, it played DVDs fine.
