Upgraded - cant jailbreak - help pleasE!!!!

Guys - i don't know what I'm on, 3.0 or 4.0

I was on 3.0 - i hit update last night - went to 4.0 - could not jailbrake - so went to DFU mode this morning and hit restore - it went through the process - and restarted- now when i connect it to itunes it cannot be read - so i have no way of knowing what firmware I am on.
 
OK I downloaded the Redsnow you posted.

I am downloading the ipsw. as well

However, the redsnow has detected the 4.0 ipsw. Should i continue with this?
 
I am selecting cydia, battery % and multitasking only.

do i need anything else

Once this is done I will install ultrasnow from Cydia and I should be good to go?

How do i get my contacts etc back? I had backedup once yesterday before I began this crazy journey

When it's done jailbreaking, it will ask if you want to restore from backup. To get your contacts back, you should do so. Please note: I strongly recommend syncing your contacts with Windows Address Book or Outlook rather than relying on your iPhone backups.

And, yes, to unlock you will need to install ultrasn0w. You will have to add the repository http://repo66.ultrasn0w.com/.
 
OK - i will do that in the future.

Its done jailbreaking - i started itunes and it automatically went to restoring from backup - now its restarting. I hope this is right.

Will start with ultrasnow once done.

Lastly - i had lockinfo on my phone earlier. I don't now. I tried downloading it via cydia - but when i start it says I need to purchase it. Isn't there a free version?

No free version of LockInfo unless yours was cracked.. (pretty sure anyways)

Anyways, you got super lucky. General rule is that you should NEVER update your firmware unless you know exactly what you're doing in terms of JB / Unlock..

If you were on a 3GS, you would've been ****ed. If it had been a diff firmware, you would've been ****ed.

Glad you got lucky. Many people were not (when 3.1.3 came out)
