They've got a mix for a short time. I'm sure they wouldn't do that for very long, so look for it to become official shortly. Tuesday? And then ALL models will be the new ones.

So if you want a new one, wait a week or so.

Those who don't have the inside scoop will get exactly what they paid for--or maybe something better.

As for Apple's confirmation of this when eWeek called them... it's impossible to hide, so I guess their only other choice was to tell a silly lie to eWeek, or an equally silly refusal to comment, which would be confirmation anyway.

Which doesn't mean Apple is now advertising the new model, and sneaking some old ones in. THAT would be bad. This is the opposite. This is in a few buyer's favor, and not against anyone.

Now, they must have a REASON for trickling the new ones in like this (I'm sure soon they WILL have real official labels and updates at Apple.com). I'd be curious to know why--it isn't bad, but it IS odd!

Because most people who buy these machines wouldn't realise the difference if it slapped them in the face.

I think you should give "most people" a bit more credit. Although not everybody reads Macrumors, it is not like everyone out there is computer illiterate.

well, i think they should lable the contents. or else people will wait till the last of the current model mac minis are sold. Maybe Apple should offer some kind of lucky bag with the old mac minis to compensate?

Why would anybody not return a mini if they didn't get the new model? Or wait on their purchase now that it's clear an upgrade is in the works?

You have to pay the restocking fee.

I think that this is really a strange behavior from Apple. If you buy a computer you should know what you get and not just have to hope that you get what you want.

I suppose Apple have been planning a refresh of the Mini but must have a load of stock left from before so they don't want to announce anything and end up with a load of "old" Mac Minis in their inventory.

When their stocks have depleted they might then update the website to reflect the newer stock.

However, it's going to have a negative effect for people that know there's an upgraded model available as they'll just hold off on the purchase until they can be sure of getting the new model.

I wonder whether Tuesday might bring along a bunch of product "refreshes". They're in a bit of a rut so maybe if they introduce minor speed bumps to a few lines, they can make more of it.

The UK refurb store has been clearing a ton of Power Macs and Powerbooks and is open daily (rather than once a week) until Monday... maybe that's in anticipation of new releases on Tuesday?

Not long to wait!

They have already switched manufacturing over to the new 1.33/1.50 models so logically they should just to drop the price on the older models or clear them out through Overstock.com. What they are doing right now is idiotic. It's just causing a lot of confusion and ill will.[/QUOTE]

Yup,
I'd agree with that. Anybody ordering a special order Mac Mini
will probably get a new model pretty much garanteed.
But they probalby still have quite a bit of older stock in
the resale channels, including Apple Stores (apple's internal direct
order channels might be flushed by now). The resellers in
particular might perhaps be rather upset if the were sitting on "old" stock.
Considering Apple's handling of resellers in the past, the resellers
themselves might be the ones to take the hit when
prices are reduced, rather than Apple, who may have
already gotten their money for their stock they sold to the resellers.

So, Apple is giving them a chance to clear out the channel.
After all, the Mac mini is now in a lot of channels, such
as Amazon, bestbuy etc. Perhaps depends also what
contracts apple has with these places. Perhaps there is
a clause where Apple would take a big hit if they had to lower
prices, because of new model releases.

Repairs

So if the new and old minis share the same model #, is the following scenario possible?

You were lucky and received a 1.5Ghz mini but something went wrong with the motherboard in 6 months. The unit is still under warranty so you send it in for repair. Unfortunately, the mini came back with the 1.42 Ghz CPU and 32MB Radeon 9200.

forrest gumpintosh

steve jobs: momma always said apple mac mini is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. :D

The Spec says 1.25 / 1.42 Ghz. You buy what you see, if your lucky you may get the newer spec. If you want the newere machine, wait until the upgrade is confirmed / specs published. Easy. Stop whinning.

When the upgrade is confirmed, people will still be whinning.

It's a smart move

Everyone who ordered a Mac mini is getting what was advertised or better and Apple sits on no old inventory. This wouldn't fly with a PowerMac, but with the Mini, c'mon, it's not a big deal.

Model number might be the same, but the serial number is different for each unit. That is all they need to track and it is what Apple's support ask you to give them when you call them with a problem about your computer.

Must admit.....That made me LOL :D Good Job!

I think you meant Good Jobs...

Let's just hope that they do an actual upgrade relatively soon; it sounds like Apple's having a horrible time with their supply sorting right now.

Oh, and just to echo some of the previous statements: It's not just the speed, but it's the extra options that are included in the upgrade. This is a big deal for the Mac mini.

I can't help but wonder if this is going to be a new trend with all upcoming product releases. Try it on the mac mini first to see how it goes, and then roll it out for other products' minor revisions going forward.

I suspect it's more likely that the reverse will happen: you got the 1.42 and it came back from repairs with a 1.5.

Continuing Trend ...

I hope this doesn't become a trend with Apple.
Oh. I do. We're ordering a couple 2.7 G5s next month. I don't care if it's announced or not, if they throw dual core's in the box, we'll all be pretty happy.

THANK YOU!!!! A voice of reason rises from the mist of madness.

I think we can expect more of this behavior as the supply of G4 processors dwindles. I fail to see why it is a problem. If you need to get the extra .75MHz or whatever, wait for it to be official to buy.

This may not even be happening...

One person posts that they have recieved a new Mac mini with a higher than advertised spec posts a couple of screenshots of the system profile, and everyone else jumps all over it as if it were news as opposed to unconfirmed rumour...

...all reports I have seen trace back to that one thread on MR, and I've been around here long enough to have seen a whole bunch of bull that had more apparent confirmation that this story.

If Apple are trying to shift old stock, why are they sending out new machines instead of the old ones they apparently have loads and loads of? I just don't get it...

I think this is the real reason that people are complaining.

Potential mini buyers have been waiting a while now for minis with the updated specs (64MB VRAM, and 8x Superdrives). Now, they are available for purchase, but only in a pot-luck fashion. So to tell 'em to wait, is a bit harsh.

They've been waiting for a while already and now that they exist, they can't buy them.

That's the real problem.

Well...it was several folks who commented they received 1.5's

not just one person...

as well, they were not 'newbies', so what would be the advantage?

its happening, whether we understand it or not...
