I'm sure this has been asked a million times here, but I just want to make sure I'm doing this the right way. I'm upgrading from a 3G to a 3G S in a few days and wanted to know what is the best/easiest procedure. I'm guessing that I just backup my 3G, remove the sim card and put it in my new 3 G S and then restore from backup. Is this the best way to get all of my apps, emails and contact info over to my new phone or is there a better way??

The new 3GS will come with its own SIM. All you have to do is tell it you want to restore from your old phone (it'll ask during the setup). I only had to reenter a couple of passwords - otherwise, it looked just like my 2G.

So you're basically saying that all of the phone info really goes with the itunes account and isn't on the sim card? I thought for sure that I would at least have to swap the sim cards out to get AT&T to recognize the phone as mine.....

I wouldn't bet on that, I upgraded today on Optus and I had to take the SIM out of my old iPhone 3G and put in my 3GS. Apple don't have SIM's packed in the iPhone box, the carrier has to supply SIM's them selves. If you are keeping the same number then it would actually require more effort on AT&T's part to give you a new SIM because then they have to port the number to the new SIM.

Anyway, I just transferred my SIM to the new phone, connected it to iTunes and restored from the backup, everything is as it was on my 3G.

I purchased my 3GS from an Apple store (in the U.S.) and it came with a new sim. When I synced my 3GS everything transferred over (contacts, apps, etc) and I threw away my old sim before giving my old 3G away.

So it does sound like all of the important info like the phone #, etc is stored in itunes (besides apps, contacts, email settings, etc) and it doesn't really matter if you switch the sim card or not. As long as you are backed up, upgrading your account to a new phone is pretty basic.....

I would suggest that when you take a backup of 3g, that you upgrade it to os 3.0 first then do the backup. I upgraded from the 3g to the 3gs last week and had a backup of my 3g prior to upgrading it to os 3.0 and when i restored my 3gs from this backup, i was missing application data for all of my apps. I tried this twice and both times no application data was restored. I then upgraded my 3g to os 3.0, took another backup, then restored my 3gs from this new backup and everything worked fine including having application data for all of my apps.

Just to be clear, my e-mail settings were not saved and I did have to re-enter the details for my e-mail accounts, but everything else was transferred no problem-o :)
