Question for you?
Why did you choose 8+ over iPhone X (just Curious:))

I am going for iPhone X 64 GB silver
Hi sunny,

Here is my rational:
- oled isn’t a draw for me
- face id and the true-depth camera is interesting but I can wait a year
- double ois is a draw but I can wait also
- the 8+ will be fine for my purposes for another year until I see the next iteration
- plus I want a new iPad Pro, Apple Watch and air pods...need to ratchet down the tech budget slightly o_O

Just received my used 7+ and it’s brilliant. 0 slowdown, everything is far quicker than my 6+ and multitasking works again.

I’ll see if next years X is worth getting but this is a fantastic phone and I can see myself using it for the next few years easily.

Hi,

As far as I see, my best options are getting either
  • iPhone 7 plus 128gb for £749
  • iPhone 8 plus 64gb for £799
  • iPhone 8 plus 256gb for £949

Thanks again.

Well, I can relate to your predicament entirely as I too was in similar situation until this morning. I went ahead and purchased iPhone 7 plus 128 GB (new) which was given a further discount of 10% in the ongoing Amazon sale here in India on the already reduced prices after the iphone 8 release.

Apart from the 3 options mentioned by you above, I have considered waiting for iPhone X as well because I stick to 3 year cycle typically and do not upgrade each year, something which I have followed from 2014. Before this I used to upgrade every year.

Coming to my rationale,

iPhone X (64gb & 256 gb):

1) First iteration and probably Apple would use the next few months to 'improve' the phone and release a much better one in the next iteration. Past record prove my personal observation. Examples being, Apple watch 0 vs watch 1. First ever ipad vs. 2nd iteration.
2) I liked Touch ID and who knows it may come back along with Face ID next year.
3) Storage: 64 GB is too less if I intend to keep this for longer (3 year cycle) and I personally do not like to housekeep every now and then. 256 is too much that I possibly wont need in next 3 years. 128 gb would have been perfect for me.

iPhone 8 plus (64 gb & 256 gb):

1) Again, storage is either too low or too high.
2) Wireless charging, small improvements in camera etc. does not excite me enough.
3) I would probably miss the A11 processor which I think is really faster but so will be A12, A13, A14 etc. Probably so much faster processor is required for people playing high end games, AI games while youtube, browsing, regular banking apps, mail app do not require such faster speeds.
4) RAM of 3 gb on both 7 and 8 reduced relevance of point 3 further.

iPhone 7 plus (128 gb):

1) Perfect storage for me and by the time I fill 128 gb, I will be in the market for another iPhone and nearer to 3 year cycle.
2) I'm not losing too much in terms of performance compared to the my personal app usage.
3) Added kicker is that price is much lesser compared to iPhone 8 plus 256 GB (remember, I had to select 256 gb if I were to go for 8 plus). Price is 86000 INR vs. 60000 INR. I had to pay 40% more. Money saved here may even nudge me to upgrade next year if the phone is much better than iPhone X.
4) Had I got the option of iphone 8 plus 128 GB at 72000 INR, I probably would have gone for it.
5) Had iphone 8 plus got a much improved design, I probably would have gone for it.
6) Had I got an option of iPhone X 128 GB at 80000 INR, I probably would have gone for it. iPhone X 256 GB is 102000 INR.

Having said all this, I'm not price conscious but value & need conscious given that iPhone X 256 GB is something I can afford with outright payment.

Price vs. what I was getting vs. what I need.

Hope this helps you if you have not ordered the device yet.

Hi,

Such a great post, thank you! I totally echo your sentiment of not being price focussed, but wanting to optimise value and need. I mean surely it's pretty apparent that if you're considering spending £800-£1000 on a phone, upping that to £1200 isn't exactly much different. But I generally like to optimise my purchases - I totally disagree with throwing money at a company for the top end thing they offer without any questions asked or consideration into weighing up what you need with what's the best value for those needs.

I really like your logical rationale as to how you've decided to go for iPhone 7+ 128GB. I'm pretty torn between it and the 8+ 64GB - it's the pretense of the better camera that's luring me in, even for the drop in capacity. I think I'm going to wait until some hands on reviews come out in the next week - go in store and see how the two of them feel and see how the difference in speed and camera quality is. But I'm definitely torn between the two. I have to agree though that 7+ 128GB does seem like the optimal value buy, I just need to decide whether the difference in camera quality is a game changer for me or not.

Thanks for the great post, it's definitely encouraged me that the 7+ 128GB is the logical buy at this point. Now to make my decision! :p

Having analysed your situation further, If you are "completely OK" with 64 GB storage, then iphone 8+ 64 GB makes a LOT of sense compared to iPhone 7+ 128GB as I believe the price difference is ONLY 50 pounds (in the overall scheme of things)?

If you would be passing on the 64 8+ to your family members after a couple of years who then again would use for couple more, then would 64 GB be enough still?

Sorry, probably I'm interfering too much :).

Great job, and it is the lightest in weight out of all the Pluses
