Speed. Buy as fast as you can get (within reason). Your computer will clock down if it can't use it.

Can the slower computer use faster ram? I thought if the refresh frequency was too slow the memory would become unstable.

OP: Upgrading memory is easy, does not void your warranty ( so long as you do not break anything in the process ). I recently installed 8 GB in my 2011 MBP I bought from OWC. Apple even has instructions on how to do the task.
