When I got my 3G last year, I had to pay a $500 depositum since I'm not an american citizen (I'm here on a visa) and did not have a SSN. I got this depositum refunded about 6 months ago.
I'm considering buying the 3GS now in December, but do I then have to pay a new depositum? Since I've started working here in the US, I've got a SSN, but I don't have any credit history here.

As long as you have an account with at&t and you just want to upgrade your phone on your line they shouldnt ask you for another deposit. Thats only for new customers.

It's called Security Deposit and it's only paid once (when you first open your AT&T account). Since it was refunded to you, that means, you are a good payer in AT&T's eyes. That means you can open more lines under your account and each one of them will not require a new Security Deposit.

Now, back to the question at hand. If you get the 3GS, you will not need a new Security Deposit. All you are doing is upgrading your phone.
