my advice:

using your friends computer....

go to www.apple.com and schedule an appointment at the genius bar.

Assumptions: you live near an apple store and your computer is newer.

These type of problems can be solved very easily in-store. (or call them if you dont live near a store).

It's just not worth the hassle and anxiety that comes with computer troubles.

If like me....

This thread pointed me in the right direction.
I had changed permissions for everyone to no access.

Blue Screen spinning wheel...
No safe boot/boot from dvd/single user/terminal access

Removed the drive from MacPro put it in an external caddy...backed up files using macbook and changed permission on drive for everyone to read only.

So while it was the same solution, rewriting permissions, this if for anyone who ends up with no access.

Hi,
I followed the instructions shamino told us but it didn't work?
Can sb. help me please?

I was in the single- user mode.
I typed in the fsck- command, pressed enter....my HD was being checked, it seems to be OK.
Then i typed the mount- command, pressed enter... it said root:

Then I typed :chmod o+r / pressed enter
I got: chmod:/: Read- only file system :confused:wtf?
I typed in:chmod o+x / pressed enter
the same: chmod:/: Read- only file system
I wrote: exit
again: exit

What did I get: mDNSREsponder: no such file or directory (It drives me crazy:mad:)

Please, please help me. I need my MB. I cannot use the target- mode since I don't have firewire (mb alu). Thanks

Fix the recurring problem?

My boss hosed his Mac Pro yesterday by removing file sharing permissions. As others have posted boot into single user, follow the fsck and mount instructions. Then "chmod 775 /", and exit, gets the machine running again. Until next reboot when the whole thing repeats again.

Any suggestions as to how to undo whatever is modifying permissions on /?

Pretty sure he is still on 10.5.8. Checked on my 10.6.2 and found drwxrwxr-t on root. Perhaps we need to add the sticky bit to his as well (chmod 1775)?

How did it happen in the first place?

First of all, this was a lifesaver with medical school exams just a few days away. I can't believe such a basic bug is still an issue 3 years after it was first reported.

However, I was curious exactly how my hard drive was set to Everybody: Read-only in the first place. I noticed a green check-mark on my hard drive icon when i woke my computer from sleep this afternoon, and so I clicked Get Info to figure out why that was there. I immediately noticed it was set to Everybody: Read-only & given that I am on public networks all the time I changed that. Next time I tried to wake my computer from sleep it wouldn't le me & then wouldn't boot following restart.

What could have caused the sudden switch in permissions of my hard drive? I definitely wasn't messing around with those settings. The only thing I can remotely think of is dragging a file from my desktop to my dropbox this morning, though I definitely didn't drag the hard drive icon with it. Any ideas what could have caused the switch?

Thanks again!!

Thank you!!!

Damn, you guys saved my system!
Good thing it is a common mistake, and a fixable one!
Again: Thanks!
