If we are no longer able to get our updates I may switch to Android. They have never had an issue like this
Wow. Is your sole reason for being with Apple so you can download updates?

Are you really expecting Apple to be releasing major iOS 16 updates at this time of year?

Two days ago, I tried to restore from an iCloud backup but didn't have the latest iPad OS... so I tried to get the latest iPad OS and constantly got the unable to check for updates - I switched to tethering to my iPhone vs wifi and got the same thing.

After trying 3-4 times it finally started, but while it was updating, checking on the status of the update install, it would pop up constantly saying it couldn't check for updates. Eventually the update happened so I could restore the iCloud backup.

But yeah, definitely not normal behavior. Probably an issue with the update servers not responding. Hopefully gets fixed soon.

Checking for update just now on my iPhone and it's just spinning and ...

Still an issue. Just spins and spins on Mac OS.

On iPhone - Turning off iCloud Privacy Relay doesn't make a difference.

3rd try and it says iOS 16.6 up to date.

Edit: And now it's working every time for the last 5 tries. lol.

I just find it out that only a few of us are dealing with this. Like someone said earlier I think this problem persists more worldwide but people just don't check their phones enough

I don't know what's going on but it is possible there are denial of service (DoS) attacks going on. A non-tech website I frequent has been experiencing this and it was also recently reported that similar situation is happening in western Canada.

I wouldn't worry about it as a end-user, right now.

For those of you with desktops, ipsw.me and install via Finder and or iTunes.

The ipsw files come direct from Apple's servers. If it's timing out there, points to bigger issue with Apple's backend going on.

Yes updates are the main thing to keep the phone secure

No, the main thing that keeps your devices secure is op-sec.

Do you go out at night without a care in the world because you assume the police will keep you safe? Or do you manage where you go, what your surroundings are, how you present yourself, etc. in order to insure your personal safety? The moment you assume some other actor—Apple, a developer, an MDM, whathaveyou—is in charge of your security, you've abdicated the most important part of owning a network-enabled device.

Everyone else, especially Apple, acts in their own best, usually profit-motivated interests. Best that you do the same.

Just thought I'd say the past 3 hours I have had no issues but 1 time. 7 of the 8 times I checked it loaded up. I'm thinking apple is on their way to fixing whatever it was

Just tried checking for software updates a few times on my iPhone 13 running iOS 16.6 after seeing this thread.

It takes ages before eventually saying failed. Force-closing settings and trying again usually cures it. Seems to be intermittent.

I'm not using a VPN or any blocking.

Not sure if it's an iOS bug or server-side.
