Ahh. iCloud syncing. That's no different than syncing bookmarks, right? While that may work well for some, I prefer being able to transfer items like URLs or notes without having to do a full sync or change sync settings.

You don't have to do a full sync, and it's nothing like bookmarking. You "add to reading list", and it's in both places. When you're done w/ it, you delete it.

How do you set up iCloud to sync a reading list, without syncing bookmarks? Also, can you selectively sync items on the reading list, keeping some on the Mac that aren't shared with the iPhone, or vice versa?

You're right; I just went back and checked that. It looks like the only way it to sync Safari entirely. Is Instapaper out of the question? You could use an Instapaper bookmarklet, and then have it on the iOS app available.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but have been reading this thread just to hopefully learn something. This morning, I decided to try a little experiment. On my MBP, I copied a URL and pasted it into a Note using the Notes app on ML. By the time I got my iPhone out of my pocket and opened the Notes app on it, the note with the URL was there and it was a clickable link.

That requires syncing via iCloud, or via iTunes on the local WiFi network, right?

iCloud sync does not require a local wifi network, or even wifi at all. It will sync over any network, be it wifi or cellular. All sync is OTA and automatic.

Notes on Mountain Lion is a separate app (not part of mail) and does sync URLs.

Notes doesn't even require iCloud to sync. It can use any IMAP mail account.

Yes, I'm aware of that, which is why I said "That requires syncing via iCloud, or via iTunes on the local WiFi network". iCloud doesn't require a local WiFi, but iTunes syncing does.

I do remember reading about that now. It still requires ML and iCloud.

I appreciate the expression, but there's no "fight" here. Just a quest for information and clarification.

Yes, that's because it synced via iCloud. I'm trying to determine the best method for syncing URLs (like the OP asked about), individually or groups of URLs, or other rich text notes without using iCloud or requiring full syncing via iTunes. The general impression that I get about iCloud is that it's great for "all or nothing" syncing, but not well suited for sending only selected URLs/notes to an iPhone, without sending all bookmarks or notes.

So you would need to set up the same mail account on the Mac and the iPhone, in order to sync notes?

You just need an IMAP account to sync Notes, you're definitely not required to use iCloud as the notes server. I use Yahoo as my mail host -- not iCloud -- so my notes are stored on Yahoo's IMAP servers.

AOL, Yahoo, Google, Zoho, it doesn't really matter, any IMAP server seems to work fine.
