Gotta say. Picked up a MacBook Pro today, expecting to instantly hate the dongle life.

Grabbed a USB-C to USB-A with it. During setup, realized that I so rarely use the USB ports to begin with that plugging in the fairly compact dongle for all of a few minutes was no big deal. And at $9? I've seen girls in Ugg boots spend more on ridiculous Starbucks drinks.

At the same time, the thinness of the new Pro makes up for it. Sitting at a desk, the lift is less and more comfortable on the wrists and hands. As someone who generally scoffs at Apple's thin-obsession, in this case? I get it and say it's worth the trade off.

The new MacBook Pro, with no ports except USB-C:
  • "Here, plug into the projector."
    • "I can't, I'm on a Mac."
  • "Here, grab those pictures from my SD card."
    • "I can't, I'm on a Mac."
  • "Here, copy that onto my thumb drive."
    • "I can't, I'm on a Mac."
  • "Here, use my mouse." "
    • I can't, I'm on a Mac."
This was classic Apple arrogance. I love Mac, but dongles suck. Going from no USB-C ports to ONLY USB-C ports was a boneheaded move. Go ahead and add USB-C so people can start transitioning over, but holy cow it's annoying to have to carry a pocket full of dongles for every contingency. I was on my way back from a cruise with my friends, and they all handed me their SD cards and I loaded their pictures into my Mac. How? It had an SD card slot.

Maybe someone needs to invent a Bat Utility iBelt to hold all the dongles you'll need to own a MacBook Pro?

This is the dumbest thing they've done since removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, which was actually far, far dumber.
  • "Road trip!!! Here, plug your phone into my Aux cord, and let's hear some sweet tunes!"
    • "I can't. I have an iPhone."
Why can't you just use USB-C cables to connect to those things?

I've seen clients use everything - airplay dependent, hdmi, dvi, vga, composite (in one bad, bad instance). I had a boatload of adaptors with the previous macbook pro, and I will continue to have a boatload of adaptors with the new macbook pro.

This is the dumbest post ever in the history of Mac Rumours. Decent troll but give yourself an upper cut man.

I agree. If anything, it shows his utter inability to adapt to new and ever-changing circumstances than any shortcoming of the new MacBook Pros.

The original post says "Going from no USB-C ports to ONLY USB-C ports" and Apple, in 1998, went from no USB-A ports (on any product) to only USB-A ports.

So that makes it ok to do it again? Not sure I get that justification.

And the iMac was a while new product line.

I'm slightly confused with some of the comments, not that I'm calling people liers but do you guys actually use your laptops in the "real world" or are you just jumping on the "dongle hate"?

I visit several locations each day and connect to a range of different displays at clients homes and premises, usually if they are a large business they have the solution readily available on site in the confrance room. Smaller businesses and clients homes not so much but that's why I have a range of dongles/adapters to cover most situations and it has been like this for as far back as I can remember, the dongle is nothing new and this has existed long before today's MB and MBP'S.

Sure the last generation offered a better selection out of the box but it still didn't cover all bases and I for one am happy that Apple have decided on one input format this time around it makes things simpler, plus that the port is so versatile it's a win win.... so we need a few new dongles/adapter, they'll just live in my laptop bag with all the other bits and pieces in there it's no biggie....

I guess having to take dongles to your local coffee shop doesn't make you look as hip hahaha ;)

That is part of the problem. Personal assumptions like your "real world" phrase.
I travel globally and seldom if ever use a dongle (Windows machine - Lenovo)
Almost all is USB A, SD Card, Network cable, or wifi. What I don't use is USB-C. That's work.
For personal after using a rMB with its' single USB C port, I had to but a side dock to get stuff done; including hooking up my iPhone / iPad. Even the few USB-C peripherals I had were very hit / miss with the Mac.
2 - 4 years from now it is likely a great idea. For now, welcome to Dongleville: population: Mac users and a growing negative sentiment.

Sad rationalization. Why should I have to "adapt" by buying dongles? "It just works IF you buy these following dongles" has become the latest trend. Adding a dongle belt for personal travel, or a dongle pouch to my backpack, or a dongle drawer to my desk should be a non-starter.
