This is exactly the point. I see no reason why audio wouldn't pass. Apple's dongles support 1080p screen mirroring off the main display. As in, for doing presentations.

You shouldn't mirror for presentations; iWork and Office both have presenter modes where more content is displayed for the presenter than the audience is aware of.

All I'm hoping for is a product that adds two USB-C ports, a displayPort/HDMI port, and one or two USB 2.0/3.0 ports, that also retains a similar design to the laptop (i.e. looks like a little snap-on, and not a giant dongle thing hanging off the side)

I know printing seems to be antiquated these days, there a lot of non-Airprint printers compared to those that are. I just purchased a Brother which has AirPrint capability. Just wondering how much this model will force users to purchase an AirPrint capable printer?

Or just use any wireless printer, or any printer attached to a network.

It's not like it has to support AirPrint. Our old printer didn't actually support AirPrint, it just attached itself to our Wi-Fi network and acted no different than a NAP. Pretty sure any modern printer can do this.

Only one port?! -Beyond stupid.
No Thunderbolt?! -Stupid
No standard USB port?! -Stupid
No MagSafe power connector?! -Stupid
Display Port (high data rate port) one way only?! -Stupid
Yet another new connector standard? -Seriously annoying
Shaving a fraction of an ounce and a fraction of a millimeter at the cost of buying and toting a bag full of port adapters & expansion hubs?! -So far beyond stupid that it seems like nobody is driving the train.

Go fix it Apple; wake us up when you get it right.

Fixed...

They had the same spiel when they introduced thunderbolt. No one really got on board for that. Kind of doubt people will be getting on board for USB-C at least within the next 5 years (at which point this laptop will be horribly obsolete)

Apple just went full retard with the single port. Don't get me wrong, USB-C sounds cool and all but putting a just SINGLE one on the MB is just stupid given the port will be occupied 90% of the time by a power adapter.

Exactly.

I don't actually have a big issue myself with USB-C onboard, the problem is there's only one of them (while it would seem easily room for 1-2 more), and no adapter was included even though you could probably count the number of USB-C peripherals on one hand.

usb-c is new, peripherals, adapters are coming.

All the jokes aside, MagSafe is a superior charging port. And you DO have to charge the laptop.

And to offer a dongle that only a single USB-C port is a major oversight. They could have put two, so you could charge and use the new USB-C devices that are coming out (which will inevitably drain power faster than anything else, e.g., disk drives with motors)

Not to mention, losing control over peripherals is a win for the consumer, but a loss for Apple, and in the history of Apple, that has actually been a loss for the consumer (it moves towards an open Microsoft ecosystem vs closed Mac ecosystem).

It's not that this laptop is dumb. It is a step towards the future. But a lot of steps are taken toward the future every day, and they fail, while others win. People take those steps and trip and fall right onto their fat ugly faces.

Making the "floppy disk" argument is a far reach from a 12" laptop with a single USB port and an insufficient dongle, when a 13" one is available with lots of ports and better everything.

Also: the use case of "reporters"... reporters are notorious for using USB drives; SD cards from cameras too... Wireless world? Yes. But that doesn't address the need to plug in to external displays, external hard drives, TVs/Projectors (HDMI), etc.

Who is this really aimed at? Nobody! It's a flop. If they start messing with the other MacBooks like this, I am going to a Hackintosh. This is total garbage.

It's finally time to start thinking about firing Tim Cook (or as they say... asking him to step down).

Ha ha ha ha ha! Tim Cook is a blessing to Apple.

i have to get over my disbelief at the hatred, ignorance, whining on this thread. this is where apple is headed, they are a huge corporation, they go where they choose to go. and i'm willing to bet that many basic mac users will buy the new macbook, and enjoy using them.

apple's responsibility is to itself, not to specific individuals on the macrumors forum...who believe the new macbook should fit their specific needs.

apple has ALWAYS gone it's own way, and we've survived (and they've thrived). they abandoned scsi, the floppy drive. firewire. the optical drive. etc, etc.

usb-c is the new standard, and am sure we'll see more flashdrives, peripherals, adapters for it. it's not thunderbolt, it's a standard PC makers are moving to as well.

anyway, am out. sad to see how far this forum has fallen...

No need to

You'll need the second port or a dongle to connect any two peripherals while on battery or any one peripheral while charging. And I don't see any reason why a second port shouldn't be there. I'll bet generation 2 will have a second port, once there are more USB-C accessories out there.

----------

I think the USB-C port is a great opportunity for a Macbook Dock! A single cable and you get tons of ports, external battery, etc...

Yes, Thunderbolt was almost that except that it couldn't provide power. If I understand the spec correctly, TB does support enough power, so I don't know why the TB Display didn't take advantage of that.

Just wondering how much this model will force users to purchase an AirPrint capable printer?

Probably not much I would guess.

AirPrint has been part of most major consumer printers for a few years now and most business have IP based printing solutions that work on the mac just fine. Remember that AirPrint was primarily designed as a way to provide network printing (a feature that already existed in various forms for Macs) wirelessly for iOS devices.

Of Course it does add one layer of complexity on the standard user's household printing problem. If this is truly the only computer in the house(dorm?) I would recommend an inexpensive printer with AirPrint support. Setting up an IP printer is a bit hands on and usually involves unnecessary hassle.

Sharing a printer from a Mac desktop (if one is available) is the most obvious non-AirPrint solution.

Every time I read a "Sky is falling" Apple review about a product announcement I want to just play the Ballmer iPhone video over and over again. "But, but, but, they can't take away my floppy drive, serial port, optical drive, firewire, iPod connector, USB...."

Oh, here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eywi0h_Y5_U

whats your objection to what ballmer said?

optical drives few years ago and usb ports now are a) certainly were not as antiquated as as floppy drives in the past and b) combined dont have a ready made replacement there was back then. seriously you could make the same argument for removing the screen or the keyboard.

My uninformed theory why only one port : could it be that apple can't make 2 port usb-c because of charging capabilities, if the macbook have 2 ports on left and right side would it "confuse" the mac for where the power source come from? Hence could cause a bug in charging the mac. And apple also provide dongle for usb-c to include usb-c, hdmi and standard usb, but why only 1 usb-c port also.

For me, i'll wait the rev-b macbook next year with two ports which apple magically added saying they hear the customer needs.

I'd speculate that there aren't two ports because each would need to be capable of 100W output for a total of 200W maximum output, and for a notebook, that would not be a reasonable requirement.

The other option would be to downgrade one of the ports to lesser power support, but the would be confusing for the user.

The MacBook Pro line won't last forever. They're obviously heading toward a universal single MacBook line.

and yet we had two kinds of MacBooks last year and now we'll have three. hmm...

Apple has historically given a few options for products (there were multiple iPods, and now there are multiple iPhones of the same generation) but recently :apple: has gone to the extreme with the personalization options in the :apple:watch! I don't think it really seems like they're pushing everyone to this laptop.

I will say this. I have been an iMac user for years and I haven't owned a laptop in years but I keep watching that MBAir get smaller and now ... this. I tell you what, my iOS devices go a long way for portable devices - but a laptop like this really tempts me. Who cares about the ports? My iMac's got that covered (oh and My mini too).

I guess in the future, Apple will "reinvent" their laptops once again by getting rid of the stupid dongles and having all the necessary ports back on-board.
They're not necessary for most people buying MacBook and MacBook Air models, hence why they're gone. Same reason for how floppy disc drives, parallel, serial ports, optical drives, etc. were ditched.

What I don't get is why the new MacBook only has 480p FaceTime Camera? Why did Apple do this?!
Image

yea that I don't know whats up with that

This is likely the last new design before ARM.

That's a long ways a way.

So I imagine this means that lightning becomes obsolete and replaced with usb c on ios devices. So will iphone 6s have usb c instead of lightning?

And does usb c do audio? I suppose this will finally mark the end of the earphone plugs on ios and computers as well!

I don't think the iPhone will go away from lightning anytime soon... but android phones will go to usb c soon.

The MacBook Pro line won't last forever. They're obviously heading toward a universal single MacBook line.

I don't think they are moving to a universal macbook line.

I'll wait a few years until they introduce a second USB-C port. One isn't enough. The original MacBook Air had one USB port and then they added another a few years later.

You will be waiting a loooong time.

Also, I am wondering is apple going to sell a lightning to usb c cable? so someone can charge/plug in their iDevice into their macbook without an adapter?

I was thinking along the same lines. USB-C to Ethernet doesn't exist yet either. Apple's USB to Ethernet is only USB 2.0 and you'd need the adapter. Guess it's time I upgraded to the new Airport Extreme anyway.

Read up on this please, before you comment, this is the way all laptops will go, and :apple: As usual, was on the cutting edge.
You and the 40 up voters, will have to get used to ATOM Processors across the board, as :apple: Is fed up being limited by INTELs ability to satisfy :apple: Needs, it's in the cards, like it or move on, you peeps who need the most power you'll never use:eek:

Flame away, but the writing is on the wall!

Errr, Atom CPUs are an Intel product as well ?

Non-issue

We will plenty of hubs, gadgets, etc. in the next month

It's just the way our overseas friends operate.

Takes them about 5 minutes to gear up.

And with it being an open format

Non-issue
