It is just a dumb decision, Apple always does this **** though and it doesn't make functionality any better, just gets people buying these overpriced adapters.

I'd rather get a good Windows Laptop, you get more bang for your buck, OEMs have wised up to battery life these days as well. Windows is a way better Desktop OS than OSX, there is more software available, plenty of games and stuff like Adobe Premier is way better than Final Cut any ways.

I guess in the future, Apple will reinvent their laptops once again by getting rid of the stupid dongles and having all the necessary ports back on-board.

Exactly. That's one of the reasons why I bought a 15" 2012 MBP after the 2013 Retinas came out. The 2012 has the exact number and types of ports that I use all day without having to worry about dongles and any dongle performance issues.

Im passing on this one. Having no USB and/or vga connection simply is a no for me. I don't feel like carrying all this cords with me.

I thought Apple is about simplicity?

Therefore waiting for 2nd gen.

Love my Air '14.

A note to the nay-sayers: Calling something too soon just means that YOU aren't ready for it. That doesn't mean others aren't ready for it.

The technology for this simply isn't there yet. It's not good enough. Maybe you mean: "Just because YOU can't afford a separate iMac instead of getting an external monitor, that doesn't mean everyone is so poor."

I don't dislike the concept of USB-C, I think it's brilliant to have one port that can pretty much accept any type of cable. The problem is Apple stupidly thought that every notebook user only uses one port at any given time. Why not include AT LEAST two Type C ports on the laptop? I mean it's common sense. I do not currently own a Notebook, but if I did I'd want to be able to charge the thing AND be able to use an external monitor at the same time, if needed. Bad, bad move Apple. Are you too cheap to include a 2nd USB-C port for your customer's who spend over $1000 on your new product??? Ridiculous!

then why even post here? get a windows laptop, and all is well...

Having only 1 port is tricky. Sure it puts it on par with iOS devices with both now having only a port and a headphone jack, but the difference is that a Mac has much more capability and usage. Though it works for the simplistic users, this will be a possibly deal breaking compromise for many.

It's a light laptop with a tinny screen, it's design to be used when out and not in the one place. So most will not be hooking up big screens to it, JMO

just checking.

i have nothing against such a machine but i dont think it deserves this price point though.

Wow so many people not getting this. Performance hasn't increased noticeable on laptops in three years as long as there is an SSD/Flash drive. It's not the focus and it does not need to improve on a consumer laptop right now.

This laptop is for portability.
It's build for wireless connections and cloud services.
It's not ment to be plugged into a charger all day while using it.
It's not ment for external hard drives.

Performance isn't the selling factor anymore. It's portability, great display, long battery life, new BT protocol, better touchpad and more.

If you need ports and performance, there's a Pro model.

The only thing I think is underwhelming on this new Macbook is the 480p camera. Especially since thats one thing the focus group use a lot.

Based upon your points, how would I be better off compared to a Macbook air?

Is it not portable?
Does it not use wireless connections and cloud services?
Is the Macbook anymore liberating from wall charging than a MBA?
One can live their entire life without use an external on a MBA

The Retina display is nice, but I am hard pressed to call the Macbook a better product or real advancement over the Macbook Air.

It's an iPadification of a notebook...Not sure that is a good thing. Even for someone with the most basic of needs, the Macbook Air is cheaper.

Never been interested in an Air, they are too underpowered but a single port is ridiculous. The point of a laptop is mobility and carrying around a bunch of adapters hinders that.

As someone who travels with a laptop - and would like the lightweight etc of this - they have effectively excluded me from the market with the loss of ports - I hate dongles - but I also hate carrying chargers around.....the loss of MagSafe is a concern, however....being able to charge iPhones and iPads etc from my Mac, as it is also charging, is a major benefit for me.....only having one port on this machine is a huge own-goal in my opinion......looks like an upgraded mac Air is the best option for us travellers until they sort it out?

USB-C is awesome and I can't wait until all of my devices use it. That said, they should have put 2 of these ports on the new 12" air. One is just a joke.

They won't sort it out. The one thing Apple and the US Government have in common is that they are never wrong.

Apple is so damn concerned with thinness that they decide to sacrifice what is important to the customer & functionality of a laptop. Earth to Apple... We don't care about how thin you make your products. With the price points you charge we want products that are functional & practical to use!

I suppose that's why thunderbolt was so widely adopted.

Thunderbolt is nothing like Type-C, Apple had exclusive rights to the technology and requires certification and costs a lot.

Type-C was made with the entire industry including Apple as the acceptable adoption standard of the future.

Thunderbolt is not your Type-C

The HDMI, USB3.1, USB-C adapter only supports 1080p. It should be HDMI 1.4 so we can at least get 1440p or higher out of the unit. If not, then put a display port instead of HDMI on that breakout cable. This makes docking the unit at home annoying.

The macbook should have had two USB-c ports not one!

I would not be too surprised if the second generation MacBook 12" has two USB-C ports. It would be a genuinely improvement and I think they will hear this request a lot from customers.

All other complaints (non changeable SSD, no ThunderBolt, no SD-card reader, etc.) are complaints of some geeks and power users, but no big issue for most customers. But the single USB-C port is a significant problem for almost everyone, I'd say.

The technology is here, just buy an Apple TV and then you can use AirPlay.

It would be better if the second generation has wireless charging, that way you can keep it with only one usb port.

I'll wait a few years until they introduce a second USB-C port. One isn't enough. The original MacBook Air had one USB port and then they added another a few years later.

The specs say it supports 4k out with native displayport 1.2 so I think we're missing some usb-c to displayport cable that hasn't been revealed yet.

I'm just annoyed we now have a port on this particular macbook that looks like a lightning port, but isn't, and that the iphones and ipads might now get usb-c later this year and we'll have to buy all our accessories new again!
