Nope. They never have to switch to USB-C on the phone. More likely, now that they have wireless charging, is that they will completely remove all ports. The iPad needs USB-C if it’s going to compete as a legitimate desktop replacement. Lightning will simply go away across the board.

I don't see it, not for many years until wireless charging is ubiquitous, and that could be quite a few years. In the meantime, I agree they don't HAVE to do anything, but I believe they will move to unify the product lines with same charge cables, same or similar USB-C chargers and same or similar USB-C capabilities without the need for adapters.

You realize technology improves and gets faster with time, right? In two years the iphone will have no data port. Get used to it.

Personally not worried about speed, more worried about convenience. If a wireless charger shrinks to the size of a power plug and can be carried everywhere or wireless chargers are everywhere you can find a wall socket, then by all means lose the port. In two years, really?

Yep. Apple always ditches the ports "too soon." One way to make wireless charging ubiquitous is to ditch the wired port. And in 2 years it will have been about 4 or 5 years since Apple put wireless charging on phones, and around 8 years since they put it on apple watch. That's forever in Apple "ditch the port" timing.

Hopefully they're thinking to switch to USB-C so that the iPad can connect to the Mac and act like a Cintiq. Tons of creative professionals use Wacom tablets or Cintiq monitors. If they enabled this functionality on the iPad Pro (and then advertised it heavily) I bet they could sell a lot of iPads just for that reason alone.

When Wacom tablets are hundreds of dollars (for a decent sized one) and a Cintiq is several thousand dollars an iPad Pro actually comes out seeming very reasonable...especially given that it is more than just a dedicated drawing device.
Get a Luna and Astropad Studio. It works beautifully, zero lag with my 9.7” iPad Pro and MBP.

It's more than two years ago I'm sorry. Be surprised if we see true wireless charging for a while and I'm sure apple won't be the first to come out with it either.

USB Type C will be on the 2019 iphones just like the new ipad pro and the new apple watch will be too. Likely new air pods will sport the new port too.

Theres a reason why the new apple watch charger comes with USB type C too.

If "dell with linux" is acceptable to you, Apple will never compete with that. Apple competes on design and elegance. They are not going to compete against "it's good enough and I can live with spending my afternoon searching for drivers."

It's not good enough for me, but it's what we are having to go with at work. Apple priced themselves out of and closed themselves off from what we needed and we're not even anything special. We're just trying to do science on a fixed income. The screens have to last, the keyboards have to last, the SSDs were good, but not when you can't upgrade them. It was getting too expensive to have to buy all the RAM up front (and seismic stuff takes a lot). And then all of the port business. No choice, really. We write our own major software programs, so we can make that stuff run anywhere.

I’d switch to an iPad Pro as my main PC tomorrow if you could connect to a monitor with mouse/keyboard support.

Dream on! Unfortunately, I have the same dream! :)

Actually, I would prefer to see Apple put together something close to Samsung's DEX, where either the iPhone or iPad could be 'docked' and become a desktop computing device. For those of us that travel for business, 99% of what I do is email, web, and MS Office apps. All of those run just fine on an iPhone/iPad.

pressing home button, or touch to come on...whats the difference? So from all of your seven Apple products none its an mac ?
I think you just came here to justify your purchase...its a very good product the 10.5" but for the same price, next month you could buy a far better one..but of course since you bought yours from refurb...it will be a price difference

The devil is in the details with this so it might be super, but I think there's a decent argument to make for keeping the 'home' button. I use my iPad as a light-weight laptop when I travel for business, and the device is frequently carried between meetings, to/from a lunchroom, etc. I truly don't WANT it to spring to life every time I accidentally touch the screen.

Consider this: do you use Alexa or Google Home? I do. Several times a day - usually when I'm in the middle of a phone meeting - it will wake up and tell me it doesn't understand even though I never used the wake word. VERY annoying. (This is not disparaging the fact that it is always listening, but rather that it doesn't always hear.)

Lightning is sturdier but USB-C would be fine. The ports on my MBP are already loose though and I’ve never had that problem with lightning ports on my iPhones.

Hmm ... so the old Apple Pencil probably won't support the new iPad Pro (unless there's a dongle in the wild that will allow compatibility), which sucks because you would have to reinvest in the Apple Pencil as well. The rumors do indicate a second generation Apple Pencil as well, and we'll end up seeing what happens during the keynote, but it currently seems like you need to upgrade your entire setup if you want the new iPad Pro.

I might get it by trading in my current devices to break even at the very least, depending on if the prices stay the same or increase.

If there's an opportunity to increase the need for a dongle, Apple won't hesitate for one moment.

I'm fine with a usb-c port. I really want this new iPad but I just purchased an iPhone max

Dongle market is thriving! Dongle makers rejoice! Throw away all of your old Lightning dongles, people! Buy the fresh new USB-C dongles! Out with the old, in with the new! *cha-ching!* /s

Good! It’s not like I’ve spent HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS in cables for my iPhones and iPad and bought a very expensive 2m USB-C to lightning literally just last month.

Bring it on, Apple! Innovation!!!!

Well, sounds like your iPad is a recent model that should still be good for another couple of years. Enough time for you to get your money’s worth before you next decide to upgrade.

Or is this just another case of faked outrage where none existed in the first place?

Apple's upcoming iPad Pro models will feature a USB-C port instead of a traditional Lightning port, according to information gathered from accessory makers at the Global Source Mobile Electronics Trade Fair by Japanese site Mac Otakara.

The trade fair kicked off today and Mac Otakara heard "talk" from manufacturers attending the event about a switch to USB-C.

This isn't the first time we've heard of Apple's plans to adopt USB-C instead of Lightning on its new iPad Pro models, which would further bridge the gap between mobile device and computer.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often accurately predicts Apple's plans, said in September that Apple's 2018 iPad Pro models will use USB-C instead of Lightning. USB-C connectivity would enable new functionality, such as the ability to connect an iPad Pro to a 4K monitor.

Mac Otakara also says that manufacturers at the event were showing off a photo of the 2018 iPad Pro dimensions that was first shared on Slashleaks last week.

That image, said to be based on measurements secured from case makers, suggested the smaller iPad Pro model will be 7 inches wide (178.52mm) and 9.7 inches tall (247.64mm), while the larger model will be 8.5 inches wide (215mm) and 11 inches tall (280.66mm). Both models could have bezels that measure in at 6mm around all sides, and at least one model may be as thin as 5.9mm.

Apple's new iPad Pro models are rumored to feature a TrueDepth camera system for Face ID and no Home button. The new devices are expected to make their debut on Tuesday, October 30, at an event Apple is planning to hold in Brooklyn, New York.

SO true! Why I wouldn't mind either a larger (15"?) iPad "Studio Edition" the Luna + iPad Pro is absolutely incredible. I am doing entire projects on it now with no issue whatsoever.

I really do not see it happening. I don't think any iDevice will ever have a sole port being an open standard for data transmission.
