USB vs Firewire

My 20" MAC does not recognize USB or Firewire from my Sony Handycam

Any ideas why my Sony DCR HC46 is not recognized? It should be automatic.
The Sony camera manual says that the MAC software should work.
I am using System Version: MAC OS X 10.4.10.
