I just hope that Apple won't drop FireWire from their laptops by the time they get USB3. I have a FW400 audio interface that I'd like to use on a Macbook instead of the built-in soundcard (which are typically totally crap compared to proper soundcards/audio interfaces).

I've been looking at replacing my MacBook with one of the new 13" Pros, I'm just wondering what the general opinions on USB3 is as far as is it worth waiting for. I'm not in any rush to get a new computer (it's just that my current one has some speed issues that can't be resolved by adding more RAM). I mean, I don't really forsee myself having any specific needs for USB3, but I'd like whatever computer I get to last me longer than the 2 years I've had my current MacBook for so the idea of waiting for USB3 is really more of a future-proofing kind of thing.

Hey, it's Airplaneman. I think we've met before:). Considering USB3 is coming out in a year or so, I say why not wait. More RAM should suffice in the meantime. Waiting will also give you a better processor in your notebook, too.

Getting the benefits of USB 3 will be challenging.

It is not sufficient to simply increase the bus speed. The performance of key USB class drivers is going to be limited by the design of the software protocol. For example, USB 2 disks are already limited by the software protocol before hitting the 480Mbit/s bus limit and they will not run any faster on USB 3 until a new driver protocol is also adopted on both device and host.

It will take quite a while to work through issues such as this. Waiting for USB 3.1 and making the most of established, reliable technologies until then would seem prudent...

eSATA?

Why not wait a decade, then? I am sure we will be at USB 6.0 by then.

Oh, cause his computer would be obsolete in a decade. Waiting a year would not render his computer obsolete. I'm sure his BlackBook can handle another year of work. 10 years is another matter. Furthermore, USB comfigurations come out about every 5 years, not every day, so waiting a year would be worth it. (BTW, I bet USB 5.0, not 6.0, would be the new thing then).

Is his computer going to be obsolete next year, then?

There are two reasons most people buy a computer; they need it or they want it.

The former is easy enough to deal with; develop a budget, figure out your needs, ask for some advice, and do some shopping.

The latter, though, is a bit different. If you have to have the latest and greatest gadget, expect to purchase a new system annually. If you just need that new-computer-smell every couple of years, it is a bit easier to gauge when The Next Big Thing is coming. I do not think USB 3.0 is The Next Big Thing.

I have a feeling that USB 3.0 will not be mainstream for at least two more years. Even then, most common applications for the technology will have a Firewire 400/800 or USB 2.0 solution available.

If you have a specialized need for a certain port, then you are always going to be at the mercy of the hardware. That comes with the territory. Look at all of us Pro Tools users that went a bit bonkers when it looked as though Apple was going to phase out Firewire (as seen on the unibody Macbook). How was I going to get my digidesign 003 Rack into my future Macbook?

Oh goodness you look familiar. XD

I was actually gonna ask about the processors, too, is i3 going to have any sort of actual impact on anything as far as my usage goes (PS, Flash, Logic), be it performance-wise of battery-life-wise?

I'm sure it's going to be faster, but I'm not sure by how much.

Simple advice:

Unless you absolutely, positively need the ability to connect to USB3, why do you need it?

AFAIK, now there is only 1 USB3 device, a HDD, for 2x more then a FW800 version is.
