Here's a couple of easy to use Automator actions for switching between the 3D Dock (Default on Bottom) to the 2D Dock (black Transparent on Bottom). It's for people who are not comfortable using the Terminal in fear of them screwing something up.

    Here's a couple of screenshots.

    Left image is 2D Dock
Right image is the Default 3D Dock

Note: This is only to be used on Leopard. It probably won't do a single thing in Tiger.

Trust an automater action or do it yourself in Terminal.

I didn't realize Terminal was that scary.

Not scary for me but, some people like to just click.

What's not to trust about my script. I made it, tried it. It worked both ways, so now I'm sharing it with others who may not like the Terminal.... plus it's quicker!

I included the reverse script in my zip file. Also, to reverse the terminal command anyway you just do the same thing except you replace the word "YES" with the word "NO" and you're back to normal again.

Is it a "defaults write com.apple..." command?

It's either true or false for those.

I did 2 other things to my Dock that is separate from these scripts. I edited the separator png files to have my own custom Dock separator! Check them out.

It is just a boolean option.

    Not for this command.

    The command goes like this:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES (to turn 2D Dock on)
defaults write com.appl.dock no-glass -boolean NO (to turn 3D Dock on)

This is what my scripts do. Just try them if you don't believe me. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes here... I'm just trying to make it easier for the people who are less comfortable with Terminal stuff that others.

That's a pathetically easy command to comprehend.

I'll try it when I get Leopard next week. Not that I care too much about the Dock's looks.

Surely it would be quicker just to type that in rather than downloading a script and then running it?

I understand some people are not comfortable with the Terminal but unless they are incapable of copying something then they should be fine if the command is given to them.

Basically open the one that you want the Dock to look like. If you want 2D then open the "Install 2D Dock" and if you want the original 3D back just open the "Install 3D Dock". Easy enough.

Sure, if you want to type it in... go ahead... I'm not stopping you. These files aren't for everyone... I posted them because I figured some people would benefit from them... that's all. If you don't wanna use them, feel free to move onto another thread... no big deal.

Oh, sorry... do you want me to post the separator files?

Go ahead and download them. They go in the following folder:

    System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources

Important: Don't forget to rename the current files to separatorstraight_backup.png and separatorstraight-horizontal_backup.png before you copy my files into that folder or you won't be able to switch back to the originals again if you change your mind.

    Have fun.

By the way, if you wanna know how I removed the separator completely from the 3D Dock, I just renamed separator.png to separator.bak.png (this way the Dock can't find the file, so therefore doesn't display it).

Ok, this is going to sound crazy to some people, so be prepared.

I want to know the command to get the 3D Dock on the side. I think the new alternate dock is hideously ugly. Is this possible that we know of yet? It would be nice if someone could post it.

    Awesome! Worked perfect.

Screw terminal, I bought a Mac so I never have to use "dos" again.

I'm not sure what you mean.

    Terminal is life for me.

Don't compare it to DOS either.

Thank you. Unlike some people who like to complain about how easy the Terminal is compared to just double clicking an icon.

This is very nice. I keep these two actions in my downloads stack for quickly switching between 2D and 3D. I like using them both, as they both work for different backgrounds.
