Because the iPhone 5c is a newer model by one year. It should get the same number of updates that the 5s would.

It's newer only by time of manufacture. Internally, it's old. You bought a brand new outdated phone, congrats. The 4S was manufactured at the same time as the 5, that doesn't mean it's going to get the same amount of software updates as the 5 because it has older internals. Apple doesn't judge by year of manufacture when deciding if a device is getting another update or not, they judge on whether the hardware can handle it. Hate to break it to you, but you own an iPhone 5 in a plastic shell.

I plan on buying my son a used 5 or 5c. Which one would you prefer and why? Thanks in advance.

The original 5 has a lot more status and it made of metal! I don't think there is much advantage to getting the case in plastic. The feel of metal is more solid. The 5C might feel better to hold but most people buy protective cases so I go with the original metal iPhone5 since both have the exact same components inside. I think if the 5C is maybe 30% cheaper then it a toss up but I would get a metal iPhone over a plastic one any day - even if it cost more! But if you can afford the 5S; then that the best since it has a fingerprint sign in and is double the speed of the 5 and 5C in CPU and a little more then that in graphics speed. It about a $100 difference new back when both were release!
