It's intentional. Apple wants us to buy an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac. All three devices, at least.
And if the competition had three viable platforms like that, they would want the exact same thing. Companies make products to sell and they never stop at just one sale.

"...and with the right accessories, it can be just as useful as a standard MacBook." No it can't, it doesn't have macOS. I simply CAN NOT do my work with iPadOS.

Right? It’s not even a comparison. Even basic things like copy and paste don’t work well or easily. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max, an iPad Pro and 16” MacBook Pro, so I’m clearly something of a fan, but I’d never tell someone to buy an iPad for work.

To have several useful accessories is nice, but it is a wrong investment, if you cannot change the battery on a 10.5 iPad Pro. Apple is offering a remanufactured unit with new battery... What policy is that?

What would say in a similar case a car owner having some problem?
Sorry dude, cant repair you car, I'll give you an used car instead....

No way. The real computer is a Mac. iOS is a toy in comparison. Of course, it depends on your task, but I mean globally; for any task. Any. Just get a real computer: MacBook Air. No jail, true USB ports, decent fully accesible file system, no need to send you files by eMail to get them on other Mac, no application sandboxing, open and work with any file from any source, full compatibility with the world (Windows, Linux, etc), run also other operating systems via Boot Camp or VMware Fusion, much powerful, and much, much much more...

Apple is probably one of the companies that have cannibalized their own products the most. That an iPad with macOS wouldn’t be a great product makes more sense.

I find the typing experience on the K380 to be miserable. I bought it because I loved the idea of being able to switch between my desktop, phone, and iPad, but it's not good enough for prolonged typing.
My experience has been the exact opposite. I absolutely love typing on the K380. I purchased it after my Magic Keyboard (desktop model) died a month after the warranty expired. The K380 has been going strong for nearly a year without a battery change.

Not sure why you think copy and paste doesn’t work well or easily? It’s absolutely the same as it is on the Mac.

I would list all the things an iPad can do that a Mac can’t, but I’m over these posts and there is no arguing with some people.

I have one -- it's fine. Though it is plastic, I would describe it as good-quality plastic. It looks good and, although lightweight, feels good in my hands. On the other hand, the feel of the keys is just okay -- adequate, but not nearly as good as the feel of a magic keyboard or the Logitech MX series. If you spend all day working at a keyboard, you probably need something better. If you use it for travel or a second system, etc., then you might really like it. Overall, I'm satisfied, but I would far prefer that Logitech release a version of the MX series keyboard without the numeric keypad.
Me too, that’s what I really want. I’ll wait to see if Apple releases new Magic peripherals with the redesigned iMac, although the problem with this peripherals is the ability to switch between devices.

As much as I love my iPad and its simplicity I could never do my daily job on one. There are simply too many software limitations even for the most basic tasks. Opening archives that aren’t ZIP files (RAR, 7z, etc); saving OpenDocument files (MS Office can read ODF but unlike its Windows and macOS counterpart the iOS version can’t write ODF); running multiple applications simultaneously, sometimes interdependent, sometimes completely independent of each other; working on multiple office documents simultaneously; and that list goes on and on forever. It's just not feasible and doable, and I would have to sacrifice so much that I would not be able to do my job, and would have to start looking for a new line of work eventually.

Now, I fully understand that some people can manage their day-to-day tasks perfectly fine on an iPad (Pro) and will never encounter those limitations. But for the rest of us the iPad remains a toy, regardless of how many admittedly fun accessories one purchases.

I returned my magic keyboard for my 11 iPad Pro because of one important fact: no tablet mode. I prefer to keep my iPad as a tablet, and use my MBP or iMac for when I need to work.

It’s like a YouTube reviewer stated: “Does the Magic Keyboard make the iPad Pro a better computer? That’s the wrong question to ask. The right question to ask is, does the Magic Keyboard make the iPad Pro a better iPad?”

Steel Series Nimbus ? It's probably an advertising thing, but objectively you can get a PS4 or XBox-one Controller for a little less money. Both offer better built quality, better buttons and probably better compatibility with ported games.

Opening archives that aren’t ZIP files (RAR, 7z, etc);

There are apps that can do this. Also, it's possible to open multiple instances in Pages to work on more than one document at a time (and even show two of them side by side.

But I have to agree - I recently did some work on the ipad - writing a storyboard for a short movie, using a logitech combo touch with keyboard and touchpad - and it took me a lot longer than it would have taken me on my desktop with a mouse, proper drag 'n drop, multiple open windows, enough RAM so it doesn't have to reload content, etc...

it's still not there yet and it probably won't until ipadOS and MacOS fuse someday in the future.

hmmm. Can I get them in a store or via Amazon?Has anyone gotten the far cheaper Amazon options?

They do. That's why Apple devices never capture more than 10% of any market.

Uh care to explain this a little more? Google is telling me that Apple accounts for about 58% of the tablet market as of July 2020.

To suggest that a $2 trillion company isn't capturing market share seems a little farfetched. Computers are right around 10%, yes. Phones seem to be right around 40-45% depending on what you're reading.

First of all that is absolutely not true - Apple dominates in all categories except for smart speakers. Second of all, we’re not talking about market share - we’re talking about competitive options.

I bought it because I loved the idea of being able to switch between my desktop, phone, and iPad, but it's not good enough for prolonged typing. I'm using the G613, which is fantastic, but only connects to two devices (1 via bluetooth, 1 via dongle) and is not at all portable.

I'd love a keyboard/trackpad for my 12" Pro, but I'm not willing to spend that much on the Apple keyboard, especially considering the poor protection it provides. I have a magic mouse trackpad, so I guess I just need a good portable keyboard. One that I could use on my lap would be best!

Do you still have the K380? I just got the new version made for Apple devices and I've found that the forward delete (fn-delete) button doesn't work as expected. I expect that if I had the word "keyboard" with the cursor between the Y and the B and held fn-delete, then the B would delete. Instead the Y deletes. Does yours do that? It seems to happen on two different MBPs and an iPad.

Tagging @bluespark with the same question since it sounds like you use the keyboard frequently.

Thanks!

If only Apple periperals (Magic keyboard, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad) allowed for different devices, to switch between them easily... It’s a pity for those of us who have an iPad Pro and a mac, and want to use them at the same time.

It’s not a lack of accessories that prevents the iPad from being a desktop replacement, it’s software.

The iPad (sort of) supports security keys. Not reliably, and not across the system. Many apps and websites that should be able to support U2F simply do not. Not necessarily an iPadOS problem per se, but there is something wonky with the implementation that has prevented sites from supporting it.

The iPad file management app is a nightmare if you need to receive, unpack, open, process, and resend attachments reliably.

Security is completely hidden and concealed from the end user, and things like VPN with kill switch are not baked in. This is a non-starter for any professional that needs to work with a mobile device.

You had me until kill switch. What profession needs instant access to disabling their pseudo-IP address?

Lots of people use VPNs with a kill switch feature; it's not uncommon. It kills the connection if you're disconnected from the VPN so you don't expose your real IP address, so better security. It doesn't mean someone has a covert occupation.
