Don't bother with the 12.1 beta if you think it has a fix for the "memory leaks" issues.
In my case the Control Center memory usage seems to grow the more video you play. For example using DaVinci Resolve or watching something with Apple TV+.

I got this yesterday with Safari using about 75GB of memory. I was not even able to do some proper screenshots because the OS just killed itself.
I have Intel MacBook Pro 16 w 64G RAM.

I was wondering lately why I keep seeing Safari using too much memory but I said maybe because of Disney+.

Can’t someone make a shortcut that checks activity monitor and force quits processes with excessive memory usage? ?
You will probably won't want this because it is not application's fault it seems and killing something while in use can give other kinds of problems. Imagine having iMovie using more ram and it gets killed. Then you will have to repair the library.

I believe until this problem is fixed the only thing we can do is keep monitoring memory usage and maybe restart that aplication and if not possible, the OS.

Good point, though I wasn’t serious. So shortcut should only kill certain tasks that keep getting mentioned like Control Center, kernel_task, callservicesd, etc

It looks like Microsoft patched their OS X Remote Desktop client because it was crashing. That was my likely culprit for that aspect that needed a reboot.

ffs never have I been more grateful at my laziness at having not upgraded.

How could they ship something with this 'level' of bug? After all the betas??

That’s discretion, not laziness. I on the other hand ordered a MacBook so it’s Monterey or bust for me. But I’m holding on to my trade-in as long as possible for backup

Its really not much of a problem. After you force quit these apps enough times, my mac seems to learn. I also use an app called Memory Diag which gives me a running number of free GB on my menu bar and the ability to free up more with a touch.

It is a problem for me when I am up against a deadline and have to stop editing a video.

Same problem here (mbp 16" M1 Max 64GB ram) - while using illustrator/photoshop 2021.& 2022, Cricut design space, excel, safari, mail, messages, finder, preview, acrobat dc, clean my Mac X & premiere pro - not necessarily all at the same time. I was also having this problem on my 15" mid-2018 mbp i9 w/32GB ram) on Big Sur, and I think even on Catalina sporadically. (Maybe not Catalina - my memory is horrible, but I know for certain its been happening for a long time).

It is much worse on Monterey - happens at least 2-3x a day. So far just quitting all the apps I can quit, or force quitting finder and relaunching it has seemed to help; this is not the way I want to work! Acrobat and Finder can not possibly need to use 60GB RAM to review 1 document. It's so frustrating - Apple fix this bug soon!!!

Just for additional information - I started experiencing these issues with a beta version of Monterey, released in August. I was using the 16" MacBook Pro (Intel) back then. I am also experiencing memory leaks on the new 16' MacBook Pro and the 2021 iMac. I know these issues might be hard to find and fix, but it's been happening for the past three months and I really wish Apple focused on that issue as a priority. Releasing Monterey with a critical bug like this was not the best thing to do.
Had the same issue on M1 in Beta months ago and reported it, was so bad back then I couldn't use Monterey for work because Chrome would crash the 16 GB system, recently while working I've almost crippled Monterey working in Chrome with 7-8 tabs.

This whole thing is a sh**-show.

Am I exhibiting child-level optimism and naivety in wondering if it will be fixed in the first update....

Good question, I would hope so given the press coverage.

There are lots of weird things in macOS 12, consider for example, once you have Rosetta installed (for the few apps that are still intel only (like Authy)), you then forever more have this intel process running:

CarbonComponentScannerXPC

Why?!

Does anyone know a good memory cleaner? One expensive I was not anticipating with 32Gb of RAM.
There is no such thing as a „good memory cleaner“. “Memory cleaners“ are little more than snake oil and are pretty much useless, they do more harm than good. Better stay away

Thank you Romain_H, I just hope they fix this memory leak then as yesterday I had to restart three times with 32GB.

Bingo. Best option is open terminal and do 'sudo purge'. But don't know if that will solve this particular problem.
