This GMail idea sounds like a good one but GMail does not allow login names of cell numbers such as 12125551212 --- it says "Sorry, usernames of 8 or more characters must include at least one alphabetical character (a-z)". Did you set up a GMail of just your phone number?

My Gmail is just my phone number minus the area code. So, in your example, it would be 5551212@gmail.com

Since the person I primarily text is my girlfriend, I just send an email to <hernumber>@txt.att.net. She replies and it goes to my email. Since I get push email anyways, I get notified almost instantly. I dropped the 1500 text message/month plan.

Aloha everyone,

I wasn't a big AIM user (really ever), but I always had an AIM account anyway. My brother likes to text a lot, so I've been looking into using AIM. I was able to send him a text, but immediately after sending it, I got the message seen in the attachment. Can anyone tell me exactly what that message means? I don't mind having the IMs sent to my iPhone, so long as they come into AIM and not the SMS client.

Also, he said that after he received my text, he attempted to reply, but received a message that I was offline. I never received that text, and was under the impression that AIM would simply store any received IMs until the user fired up the AIM client, then all unviewed IMs would be downloaded to the user's AIM client. Am I correct in this understanding?

If I have an away message on in iChat (I have it set to auto-reply) and I receive an IM from a mobile number my away message auto-replies and I get this note - "The other person appears to be currently offline. SMS Country not allowed." However, after that note I've still been able to receive and send text messages to that number with no problems (without having to start a new convo or sign off or do anything special). I've just always disregarded that notice I guess.

That window is normal. That means that they can send you a text response and it will go to your AIM client. Furthermore, the AIM client is a little flakey at the moment about staying logged in. Come September, when push is released, it should be more reliable.

So, I used to use this a lot in the past. I.e. my friends on AIM on computers would send an IM to +1mynumber and I would receive it on my (then) Verizon cell phone.

Now that I've gotten an iPhone, though, I'm finding that messages sent to my mobile number from AIM aren't coming through to my phone. I've tried sending myself test messages (from AIM on my computer) but none get through. Anyone else experiencing this or know what's going on?

aim buggy

aim app currently is full with bugs perhaps when they release a new update it will fix many of the issues.
