I have a business account with a voice and data plan (using a Treo 680 now). I spoke to someone in customer service at ATT who told me that in order to upgrade to iPhone, I'd need to get a different data plan and then of course lose the discount(s) I have now. Plus, I assume that means they'd want another 2 year commitment. I guess I'll need to look at this iNdependence with my old SIM but wonder if some features (visual vmail I could live without) wouldn't work?

Bike,
The only thing you will really miss out on if you do that is visual voicemail. Not much to give up considering what you get in return.

Nole,

Yes, this work. I did the same thing (used old SIM card to maintain my discount). I already had the Unlimited Media Max plan (I switched to it after activation of my Treo) and wanted to keep it. My voice and data work just fine - I used Independance to jailbreak and activate the phone with the old SIM and I've also used AppTap to install some extra apps. Enjoy.

Thanks Gryfon. That is what I am going to do. I just need to add the unlimited MediMax to my plan for $19.99. My iphone is on the way!!

Hi there - I'm hoping someone can clarify things for me. Like the posters in this thread I have an ATT business plan (with a Razr V9 - which I plan to return) and wanted to use it with the iPhone without committing to the 2 year contract. Here's what I did:

1. Bought a new iPhone and paid someone to unlock it. Got rid of the sim card that it came with.
2. Loaded my old sim card (without using iNdependence) which has the ATT $19.99 unlimited data plan. Everything seems to be working fine.

So essentially, I have an unlocked iPhone and using my old ATT sim card.

But I have some questions as I noticed that when I log into my ATT account online, they have my device show up as an iPhone (!) rather than my V9. And when I dial 611 from the iPhone (remember that I have the old sim card in there), the options i get all relate to the iPhone!

I have a couple of questions:
1. How did ATT recognize that my old sim card is actually in an iPhone rather than my V9?
2. Did this occur when I hooked up my iPhone to iTunes? Note that it did not ask me to activate anything.. I just went ahead and synced my outlook and music.

Hopefully this doesn't mean that my existing plan has been replaced with an iPhone plan.

Has anyone else noticed this? Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I got my first bill and it was no different. It was $20 more for the MediaMax plan but no additional charges despite the ATT website showing that I am using an iPhone!

PS I still haven't updated to 1.1.1, just can't seem to find a reason.

SWEET... thanks for update.......

NoleRx do you have your iphone under a business att account or regular att personal account?

It is a personal account, but was set up with a corporate discount. I think in this case ATT considers it to be a business account becasue of the corporate discount. This was my main reason for not activating legitamately...why should I give up my discount when I didn't have to!

ATT plan

I have an ATT plan from the dawn of GSM here in the Bay Area. 39.99$ a month, 1200 minutes, N&W and unlimited text. I would like to ADD the 20$ plan and get the iphone. Is there a way to do this, other than jailbreaking it?

anyone with experience doing this?

'ya know. The question isn't "can I do this", but "should I do this". I, personally, find it ethically questionable to not comply with the terms and conditions with which every owner of a "traditionally/legitimately" activated iPhone on AT&T's network is complying.

It's probably on the edge as far as "legality" goes as well, but that's not for me to worry about...

question

Well, the question I have is, on the ATT website, it says, just ADD the 20$ data plan to an existing plan?

doesn't that mean I can just add it?

IMO, if they let you activate it that way thru iTunes, more power to 'ya. If you have to go and activate your phone with AT&T by using any other method, well...
