Used my phone in a pool for a good hour taking nonsensical underwater snaps and pictures. This was a month ago and no problems. Do what makes you happy.

Do what makes you happy but remember when and if the phone dies Apple is not responsible to cover any water damage.
So you'd be responsible to pay the $350 replacement fee and I dont think that will make you very happy...

I just always assumed the water resistant moniker was for accidentally dropping it in a puddle of water for a few seconds or if it gets wet in the rain. The Apple Watch series one though is pretty water resistant. My crown on it got hard to turn and Apple themselves said to hold it under water for a few seconds and it would fix it. It actually did fix it as well.

Correct. Depending on which Apple Watch model you have that is. But the first Generation Apple Watch can get "Wet", but has no water resistance rating. If it becomes dirty, it can be rinsed under water to remove any debris, but submerging isn't recommended.

Waterproof cases go for as cheap as $10 (maybe less on ebay)

Well worth the investment, and peace of mind. I know they look goofy but you can get some great underwater shots!

In the case you get thrown into a pool or the phone slips into the bath, I think the 7 can handle it.

Never thought of considering a waterproof case. I didn't even know they made one for the iPhone 7.

This is so freaking stupid. Apple has an ad where a guy throws a naked iPhone on his bike handlebars to go road-biking in a thunderstorm. If I do that, and my phone breaks from water damage, I'm freaking the hell out on a store employee if they don't replace it.

I've used my phone to shoot video in torrential rain a few times now and have had it soaked in sea water, works fine. The rain was intentional, the salt water was not, so I just use it, and don't worry about water damage, if it dies oh well. The 7 is clearly not as fragile as some people are making it out to be, not sure where they are getting their info.

My Series 0 Apple Watch seems to be completely waterproof. I've worn it in the showers after going to the gym, it's been in the sea, fallen in the toilet. Never had any issues.

That's great that your first Generation Watch has made you thus far with water exposure, but by no means is it even close being rated to water proof, when the Series 1/Series 2 is only rated for 50 meters Water resistant.

I used to work for a cellphone shop. Water resistant is so far removed from waterproof. I had so many angry people over denied warranty with water damaged devices that were sold as water resistant.

If it accidentally gets a little splash, you'll probably be okay but to risk it intentionally? Hope you've got insurance!
