The square edges on the iPhone 4 to 5S are uncomfortable.

Apple rounds the edges. Apparently nobody can grip the phone now.

Gotta love it.

I have an iPhone 6 on order and didn't include a case as I like using my phones naked (I am getting AppleCare+ and I am fairly careful with my phones - have been using iPhones since the original and never broke one).

However I have seen a few people on online boards and website raising concerns that they used to be the same buy really feel insecure doing it with the 6 as due to a combination of slippery material, larger size, and rounded edges they are not able to get as good a grip as they used to with previous phones (I think their main concern is that the cannot easily roll their fingers all around the phone and hold it tight, and have to just let it rest on their hand which is not as secure). This review pretty much covers it: http://appleinsider.com/articles/14...inch-iphone-5s-vs-the-larger-47-inch-iphone-6

I am wondering what people who are used to naked phones and have purchased an iPhone 6 are thinking? Is the grip that bad without a case?

Thanks for your comments!

The concerns raised in that article seem only relevant to people who hold the phone with the kind of grip (death grip) that the author describes. I've also been an iPhone 4 user for the last 4 years, but I've never held my phone in that way, so his concerns are irrelevant to me. I always hold my phone in a "cradling" kind of manner with three fingers behind the phone and my pinky underneath the phone for support. I find this to be the most comfortable way of holding a phone, and this way can support even larger phones (since I don't need my fingers to reach all the way around the phone).

I agree. The type of grip makes all the difference. My hands are big enough where I can hold the iPhone 6 with my pinky on the bottom, my ring/middle fingers on the back of the iPhone wrapping to the opposite edge, and my index finger on the top corner. I can hold it securely like that with one hand and with two I don't expect it to go anywhere.

Edit: Added a photo for reference.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Can't answer to each one of them but all useful.

So there doesn't see to be a clear consensus, even within people who used to or would prefer to go caseless.

I definitly don't share the "it's expensive, just get a case" opinions as this is why I am getting applecare for (and no I am not abusing it, as I said I have never broken an iPhone and in any case I am sure Apple have set the price to make sure they do break even even with unreason able people).

I guess I'll have a look at minimal cases and order if I find one I like, or otherwise just wait and see if I feel like it is absolutely necessary once I have the phone in hand ...

Yeah actually I also tend to hold my phone in the same way as you do, so possible I would be fine.
I guess one thing is that holding it that way the base of your thumb is really stuck at the bottom right corner of the phone where with the death grip it's closer to the middle ... Might have to use and abuse this readability thing.

First night I was really worried, and after reading Gruber and Nilay's review I was like 'Apple case, that's the one for me'

It's been 10 days, haven't bothered to get a case, not worried anymore. I've got quick at using it in the street, hold it so I can't drop it and you just get used to two handed use

I'm pretty clumsy normally but I've rarely dropped and iPhone in 4 years, and never cracked a screen. Wife dropped her 5 down multiple flights of stairs and nothing, iPhones are durable devices

And despite all the bendgate stories, looking at what they've engineered and having held it pretty constantly, gone running with it, thrown it about the bedroom and flipped it through my hands, I think the Plus will be a very durable device in real life

If you can adapt and don't be an idiot, its a beautiful device caseless

I don't use a case. Didn't for my 5, won't for my 6. I bought a case for the 6 and took it off after four hours. Just detracted from the look at feel. I have AppleCare + just in case, but I've never broken/shattered a smartphone.

The look of the phone caseless is great, and my hands are big enough to hold it confidently. If I ever break a phone maybe I'll reconsider, but for now I'll stay naked.

I stopped using a case with the iPhone 5 and won't use one with the iPhone 6 (which I'm leaning towards getting after having played with both in the Apple store). I do buy AppleCare+ for piece of mind and I figure I spend less on that than I would on a few cases.

you got applecare +

thats your case. If a case gets dinged up you replace the case right.

Apple care won't cover cosmetic blemishes so unless you're going to purposefully smash your phone, it's not going to help. I used my iPhone 5 without a case all its life. (2 years) and never broke it, but it didn't look anywhere near as pretty at the end as my iPhone 4 before it that was in a case. My 6+ is in a Apple leather case.

I am extremely careful when handling my stuff, yet 3 times the phone almost slipped out of my hand. First time was when I first got it. I went to the Apple store and bought the leather case and put AC+ on right after. Twice more after as I tried on a different case after taking the case off.

This phone is a slippery piece of gadget. The rounded edges feel nice but it's like holding a wet bar of soap.

I won't go as far as "a wet bar of soap", but it does have a larger tendency to slip in your hand. I've dropped mine once - from a seated position onto carpet, so no damage - but I never would have dropped the 5S in the same circumstances. I think that makes two drops total, from the original iPhone to the 6 (and every one in between).

That being said, I'm not on pins and needles while handling it, just more cautious. The most vulnerable time for me is pulling it out of my horizontal belt pouch, from the first two finger grab until I get my whole hand on it.

This will be the first iPhone that I don't get a case for. I love the naked feeling too much.

In my line of work, lots of wilderness and outdoors I always have had at least a bumper case. I just can't take the chance of lost income due to having a busted phone out in the field, going caseless would be downright reckless.

So I just took delivery of the leather case for my 6 today ( still waiting on the phone ). It feels decent but I am kind of dissapointed it does not have the soft liner on the sides like the one for my wife's 5+ does which has basiclly kept her phone in mint condition unlike my bumper case. That aside, I have already cut and installed a small strip of black gaffer's tape on each side of the case because it lacks the texture required for a safe grip.

I'll be looking forward to more refined and well thought out solutions for the 6.....at least it is thin so adding a good case will not be as bulky as in the past.

Yeah, abuse AppleCare+ so that Apple starts charging us even MORE as a service fee for phone replacement.

That's the way to go.

I don't think that's abuse. Isn't that the point of AppleCare+? If your phone breaks due to accidental damage you can replace it for a reduced cost. I didn't buy AppleCare+ for the extended tech support over the phone.

Agreed, I am also glad to have AC+, but it does not reimburse lost income, a good case might prevent that loss...

Just throwing in my experience: have always had a case, but am going case less with the 6, bought Applecare+, and just ordered BestSkinsEver glossy to add some grip to the back and sides.

Actually I'm more fancy on original design, sometimes would like my iPhone get naked, yet most of the time have a protective case, esp. have a screen protector for the screen and it really makes me relax...
