I've owned a 13" MacBook for the past three years and its been fantastic using it both at a desk and on my lap. I travel every week, spending 2-3 days at a time away from home. Recently picked up a 15" MacBook Pro and feel exactly the same about this Mac. Both are awesome for couch and bed surfing, I've used these on my lap for hours upon hours at a time and found it a very pleasant experience (although the base of the 15" MacBook Pro does get considerably hotter than the MacBook).

I think it all comes down to your requirements and preference on screen size! Personally I think the weight difference is minimal and wouldn't let that impact your choice! :)

The original MBA was the first Apple laptop I ever owned. Honestly, for portability and use away from a desk, it would be my first choice except for one problem: the battery life is not very good for anything video related. I could barely get through a 1 hour tv show on it. Even had Apple test it and it came out perfect and the Apple store employee told me that what I was getting was about right. That's so frustrating.

I moved up to an i7 15 inch and it's amazing...sure there is a size difference, but not enough to make it a problem. And after a 1 hour tv show, my battery life is at 75% remaning. So awesome!

Among the three notebook sizes offered by Apple, the 15" on this forum seems to the consistent winner, especially if you're working away from a desk.

13" and external monitor seems popular as well, both great choices.

on my bed most of the time, can't wait for henge docks to come out with the 15" then it will be docked most of the time connected with the monitor :D

I've used a 17'' MBP extensively while watching TV and laying on the couch, and I don't find it to be too unwieldy. Sure, a 13'' laptop will always be nicer and more portable, but a the high-res screen on the 17'' gives you what is essentially a laptop with the power of a desktop computer with the same resolution as a 24'' monitor. The only thing you really can't do with the 17'' is use it comfortably on a tray table on a plane, especially if the person sitting in front of you is leaning back.

Thats probably the best way to view this.

You want a desktop version of a laptop, grab the 17 inch.
A nice middle ground go for the 15 inch.
If portability is your main goal, grab the 13 inch.

It's really personal preference that makes the decision, but for me the 15" would be the way to go IF I wasn't concerned about traveling with it. If you're taking it on a train or a plane, I think the 13" is the better route. Taking it to the couch? Go for the 15".
