I have taken my MBP to many hot climates, including Las Vegas and Hawaii, for many weeks at a time on occasion. I have never had a problem with heat or air travel causing damage. I put the laptop in a sleeve and then in a padded backpack as a carry-on. Nothing bad has happened.

I do agree with other posters though -- I always use it less than I anticipate. I feel I need to bring it anyway to stay connected in the unlikely event something really bad happens and I need the laptop to get things done.

Hi All,

Really silly question but at the start of the year I purchased my first MacBook and I absolutely love it. I am shocked at how quick it is and the battery life and I take really good care of it. I am now going on holiday tomorrow (I normally take my laptops with me) and in debate whether to take it along with me or to take my old laptop (bigger and heavier)? I have a case for my MacBook but I am nervous that taking it with me as I do not want the the performance or battery to drop as it has remained as good as it was out of the box so far.

Can anyone advise if I am being over the top here or is it sensible to leave the device at home to keep it's performance?

Thanks!
Please remember that the people who live (year round) wherever you are going have computers as well. They deal with whatever heat and humidty you will experience every day. Also, iPhones are built with very similar components, used in the billions worldwide, and taken through airports constantly. Your laptop will be perfectly fine as long as you take care of it.

It does sounds like you may want to buy AppleCare just for peace of mind if you have not already.

Agreed. Just use some common sense OP. You've taken laptops on vacation before, this is no different. Enjoy your vacation!

But can it replace a laptop?
I think an iPad is perfect on vacation. Maybe not the best typing experience, but a bigger screen for games and videos and a potential option to do the few things you might need for work. Much easier to transport than a laptop too

Different people will have different opinions. In my mind, if you are worried enough to start a thread about it, just bite the bullet and take your old one if you really really must. Sure, extra weight, etc, but at leat your mind will be at peace.

Just my 2c

It’s just another thing to haul along and possibly get stolen/damaged. Too late for this trip but in the future, maybe an 11” or 12.9” iPP? Those should handle research very well, maybe some photo manipulation if you’re into that.

Well, that and moving from air conditioned airport straight to a highly humid climate outside. This can actually trigger the moisture strips inside.

I have taken my MBP to many hot climates, including Las Vegas and Hawaii,

Taking a camera from a cold A/C hotel room outside to a hot humid atmosphere is a problem. You can see the condensation on the surface of the lens. If the camera is not well sealed then you can imagine the same thing happening inside.

The solution is to put the camera in a sealed bag, such as a ziplock, not removing it until it comes to temperature. For a laptop in a high humidity climate such as Thailand it might be sufficient to put it in the laptop sleeve of a backpack, closing it tight, and letting it temperature level there. Haven't tried.

Heat alone, such as low humidity Vegas, isn't an issue as long as you check the environmental limits for the laptop in the technical specs (50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C) for the new MacBook Pro).

The iPhone is sufficient. Even with that. I really limit the use. As I want to tune out of my life and regular daily activities on vacation.
Depends on what you are doing. I know for me when I take long flights to Alaska on vacation I need my iPad to read books and watch movies.

If you take it on the beach, the heat/direct sunlight will negatively (and permanently) affect battery health. Might not be a huge amount but it will. Also, sand will destroy the machine of course.
If you're keeping it indoors it doesn't matter.
X-Rays do not harm Macs. Your biggest risk is damage in your Carry On bag on the plane, but if you're careful it'll be fine.

I took my $4.5k MBP on vacation, 16 hour drive plus a flight to an island and had no issues. I didn't bring it outdoors, though. That's the key. Keep it indoors if you can.

P.S.that battery heat thing I mentioned above also applies to your Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, etc. Keep them out of direct sunlight if possible.

Use the f*cking thing. That’s why you bought it. If you need it and want to take it enjoy it. Your fear is feeding itself

if you ever turn your laptop on, the heat will negatively (and permanently) affect battery health.

Depending on where you are going/staying, theft is likely to be your biggest concern. If you have a good case, the laptop will be fine otherwise.

Nothing ruins a vacation like having to worry about making sure your stuff is safe though. If you think you will worry about it (on the plane, in your bag, in your hotel, etc), just bring your old one. If you think you would prefer having your new Mac around with you, bring the Mac.

Personally, ever since the iPhone 7 came out, I haven’t felt a need to bring a laptop with me on vacations.

Just when I think these forum questions can’t get even more ridiculous…

If you’re worried, leave it home. Don’t even consider the millions of others who’ve done the same without problem for years.
** without "A" problem for years.** ridiculous huh... ;)

You must take a iPad on vacation.
Bizarrely i just came back from a holiday where I did not take an iPad with me. In fact I didn't take anything tech-wise except my iPhone and charger. It was very liberating to be almost tech-free for a week. Having left my iPad at home, it doesn't seem to have caused the world to end, so I think we can conclude that the word 'must' is a bit of an over-reaction.

I understand your concerns, but a laptop is just a thing which is meant to be used. Battery is also meant to be replaced and Apple offers this service at their Apple Stores. It's like tires on a car.

And if you are still worried that something might happen, just leave it home. You will not be able to enjoy your holiday constantly thinking about a laptop.

If you leave it home, just charge your MacBook around 50% to store it. You can check Apple's recommendations on how to store your MacBook here: https://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/#general

Store it half-charged when you store it long term.

If you want to store your device long term, two key factors will affect the overall health of your battery: the environmental temperature and the percentage of charge on the battery when it’s powered down for storage. Therefore, we recommend the following:
  • Do not fully charge or fully discharge your device’s battery — charge it to around 50%. If you store a device when its battery is fully discharged, the battery could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding a charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may lose some capacity, leading to shorter battery life.
  • Power down the device to avoid additional battery use.
  • Place your device in a cool, moisture-free environment that’s less than 90° F (32° C).
  • If you plan to store your device for longer than six months, charge it to 50% every six months.
Depending on how long you store your device, it may be in a low-battery state when you remove it from long-term storage. After it’s removed from storage, it may require 20 minutes of charging with the original adapter before you can use it.

I've taken my Apple notebooks out on vacation every once in a while since 2006. The better vacations are those without a notebook. But I like to take my iPad, which is helpful for planning, research, light photo editing, but is not too much of a distraction otherwise.
Beyond, never noticed any impact on battery or total device performance, neither because of frequent screenings, nor because of long high altitude radiation exposure.

sure, but I'm not about to start watching the in-flight entertainment or bringing Bluetooth adapters with me. The iPad is for watching stuff or playing games on the plane to make the traveling part slightly less insufferable.

Did you buy this laptop to use it or to just show off?
I mean if I'd baby my tools this much they'd long stopped being tools. It's a computer, not some jewelry.
