I will be having a much needed break but I still like to do research and work in my down time. Lots of people do this.

It's not really a holiday then is it. When ever I have a holiday works never follows me, I completely shut off from work because that is what a holiday is supposed to be for, to get away from work, to not think about work and just relax and enjoy the holiday.

Sounds like you cannot detach yourself from work/study (which ever one) which is a shame in my opinion.

People do things in different ways, you don't get to dictate what "really a holiday" is to anyone else. Sometimes just being in a different place and spending most of your day relaxing or doing non-work activities can lead to some worthwhile creative breakthroughs, and you want to have a device there so you can pick up and do little bits when you get a chance. For me a holiday isn't about leaving everything about my day-to-day life behind, but just having a bit of a change. Sometimes I take "holidays" that I don't even book off work, I just go work from somewhere else for a little while. It helps break you out of patterns and habits.

Personal opinion of course.....I don't understand these folks that want to have everything with them on vacation. Sure, take a phone for communication purposes but lugging around a laptop? Enjoy the vacation environment, unplug a bit, no need to watch Netflix and movies etc. So many folks are seemingly afraid, or unwilling or incapable of being alone with only their mind as a companion. The mind is a wonderful machine and can be quite interesting and enjoyable if not bombarded with electronic distractions hour after hour.

If distraction is required, take a good book to read.

I am not 'dictating' anything, I am expressing an opinion and I can therefore express my opinion to whoever i want to.

You wrote definitive declarative sentence: "It's not really a holiday then is it." Yes, it is a holiday, if the OP considers it such. It's not up to you to define what it is. Of course you can express your opinion, but maybe think about doing it in a nicer way.

I traveled with my MacBook Pro machines for years to various countries. They were fine. If you feel you’re worrying too much maybe it’s time to do something about that aspect- it could be a better strategy in the long run. Worries just tend to eat us up, and life’s too short for that extra stress.

i've packed my macbook, a 27" screen, an ipad, iphone, all my adapters, a small music keyboard, headphones. a large battery pack (in case i lose power). no room left for: clean shirt or underwear, other pants or shoes... but i can fit a toothbrush. am ready for my 2 weeks in the bahamas. i expect to get a lot of surfing (the computer kind) done. all is well

I understand your concerns, but a laptop is just a thing which is meant to be used. Battery is also meant to be replaced and Apple offers this service at their Apple Stores. It's like tires on a car.
It's really not. You're right that it should be, and it once was. But now it's more like a complete head-off engine-rebuild, with the labour-cost to match.

This may shock you, but some people like both movies and books... I was always under the impression a vacation is about going somewhere and relaxing and enjoying yourself. I guess I missed the memo that we all have to have the exact same vacation. Why even take a book? Isn't being alone with your thoughts good enough for you? Are you afraid and unwilling to be with only your thoughts and not the writers'? Films & books are both art forms, capable of great meaning. You really view one as inherently less because it involves technology? Seems a bit shallow

Buying a laptop and being too afraid to use it for regular purposes is a bit silly imo. Being snobby about what entertainment people are allowed to bring without being insulted is also silly.

When I take long flights I pack a iPad mini with me to read and watch movies.

If you use a MacBook Pro on a domestic flight with others next to you you will be cramped.

True but the discussion is not about the space constraints on economy flights (even some iPads will feel too big on these).

Take the MacBook. I got back from a vaction in Spain last week and I tossed my MackBook Pro in my checked luggage at the last minute and I'm glad I did because travel by air is INSANE right now and when my flight back to DC got cancelled in Barcelona it would've been hellish to try and fix everything on my phone. Impossible actually.

Wouldn't worry too much about harming the life of the battery. You of course got the Apple Care + right?

In checked luggage? Not much use to you if your bag goes missing or gets delayed which thousands upon thousands are these days.
