But how will users be able to download and install these applications?
Only way i see it is if the phone is jailbreaked but then you have Cydia which is very well established.
Without jailbreak i doubt Apple will Allow such a move, even with JB i bet Apple will try to sue or something.
I Like AppStore but its true they are to restrictive specially towards some silly things like themes and such , i would love to be able to use winterboard without JB for instance.

This is for the Mac/PC. :)

I don't like Steam. The concept of it is good, but it's far too buggy, and you're forced to use plastic to pay for games.

I've used PayPal a number of times. It's been there for a good few years. It's one more payment option than you get on iTunes/AppStore.

Steam will likely offer a gift card option once they complete the rollout.

Glad to hear it, I think Apple's App Store is wayyy too pricey on most products. Compare them to other digital retailers and they are almost always more expensive. Competition would be good!

Apple doesn't set prices on the Mac App Store, developers do. As a developer myself, with an app sold both inside and outside the Mac App Store, I wouldn't charge less on Steam. I'd also refuse to use it if they demanded lower pricing, at least if/until they took over the market making that the only viable way to sell (I don't think that's going to happen).

The fact that it won't be able to function on iOS is going to greatly hinder its ability to compete with Apple's App stores on iOS and OS X.

I hope it brings greater light to the anti-competitive practices on Apple in not allowing competing application stores on the iOS platform. What if steam believes that they can run a better store for apps on the iPhone than the App Store? Lower prices, better return policy, better organization, fewer crappy apps, more favorable cut for developers, and so on?

Well, they can't - but they should be able to.

I disagree. The Mac AppStore and iOS AppStore are completely separate. They dont interoperate in any way at all. I cant go and buy a app that I know works on iOS and OS X once.

iOS is a whole different market. Just as any tablet/phone will be (for now at least). You never know, this could actually result in some sort of legal proceeding down the line that forces Apple to allow competing appstores and non-appstore apps onto iOS. I can imagine Valve will want to stop at just Win/Lin/Mac.

This has been coming for a long time. Gabe Newel has been slagging off Windows 8 and has been building up a huge team of developers for a while now to take on the Linux port. With that near completion it makes sense to now focus on the next big thing, allowing more than just games to be sold, followed by getting the store onto as many platforms as possible.

I recall reading a few months ago how Steam works on pricing. For indi developers its very similar to the Google Play method where you set your own prices. They dont interviene in any way. They also dont demand that you are exclusive to them.

I use paypal for iTunes/AppStore all the time. Steam already has gift cards so far only at Game Stop but I bet they start going to other stores now. Link

I wasn't comparing to Apple. I'm glad that they're adding gift cards. Still, Steam tends to be buggy for my friends and me.

...for now. It shouldn't be too difficult to see that the plan is to have a unified platform for all our devices. Regardless, presently you will find that iOS apps often have companion desktop apps that are sold on the Mac App Store.

You never know, this could actually result in some sort of legal proceeding down the line that forces Apple to allow competing appstores and non-appstore apps onto iOS.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for.

This could be an amazing thing for both users and developers.
I personally trust valve more than apple when it comes to digital purchases... They have been doing it for a long time, and doing it extremely well.

That trust will slowly turn to rage if you have a poor internet connection that either refuses to let your game start or stops it frequently mid game.

Is that a PayPal debit card or have Apple actually got full PayPal integration? (Not seen it myself so was curious).

Also wasnt aware about the steam gift cards. In that case the post that I quoted was meaningless

Full integration its super nice and one less database to have my credit card stored in. Link

While I "hate" PayPal, I would rather use it for my payment system. It helps even more when I am selling things.

Note: Hate is a strong word.

This is nice, but, Steam on my 2011 MBP barely runs. Locks my whole laptop up and uses up about 50% of my i7 just idling.

Anyone else getting this issue? I've done multiple fresh installs but it just doesn't seem to click. I only have it installed for Portal 2.
I have noticed that the Store page with its image rotation tends to consume a lot of CPU time. If I have Steam running it is hidden on the Library page and with my Friend's list up.

I have Steam running on my 2011 MBP pretty much always (such as right now) and it uses...let me check...5% of 1 logical core. That's about 1% more than Skype, which I also have running all the time, and about 1/2 the typical iTunes usage when I am playing a song.

It's very tempting sometimes while at work to right-click on that little black icon and start up a game. Must. Not. Play. Civ5.

not to get on a tangent, but Civ 5 runs like a dog on my 15" MBP. That's got nothing to do with Steam.

Are you running Gods & Kings or Vanilla? The expansion is SLOW.

How else would it work? Slide some cash into the optical drive? :D

Gift cards for online things, or, in other cases, buying DVDs. The DVD is pretty good for backup. I don't want to give my credit card out, but I guess PayPal is good. Minecraft, on the other hand, requires you to use a credit card, and their security is horrible (since Mojang is a terrible company).

Agreed

and they were first to pioneer good cross platform DRM

...The Steam store could become a convenient distribution point for software that is not compatible with Apple's Mac App Store...

Except that there is nothing convenient about Steam.

Steam is an incredibly slow, unresponsive, mess (at least on the Mac - don't know about the Win/PC version). Does anyone know what the underlying tech is? (Java? Flash? Adobe Air? Silverlight?)

(The only reason why I'm using Steam is because of Team Fortress 2 - while loading times and server refreshes are off the charts for that game as well (doh!) - it is hands down THE best multiplayer FPS available).

Eh. You can get a throwaway Visa prepaid card, or one of those cheap Wal-Mart debit cards if you're worried about posting your CC numbers online.

It's not just for Macs. Though I like Steam quite a bit, it is a bit of a slow, boggy mess that takes about forever to do anything.

I'd rather they give us an actual Mac app instead of the horrific lazy ass port which currently exists on OS X.

Yet the iTunes store launched 4 months before team.
