Well I'm not using an external display so that doesn't apply to me.

But that's why I think it's a hardware issue. I must've had a defective graphics chip. The fact that you have the same build with all the same software yet don't have the flickering problem kinda proves that.
Ahh gotcha, I'll try testing without the external display.

It would be interesting if one were to screen share remotely if they could see the issue or if persisted only on the end user display...
they couldn't, screen capture doesn't record it. (been through that with apple, had to record it with phone)

I don't get any screen flickering unless an external display is connected (in my case it's with an Aukey USB C hub + VGA projector)

Mine is doing the complete opposite, it stops flickering when I connect an external display.

Does your screen flicker with a standard resolution 1680x1050 on internal display?
I have tested with a new Mojave beta and it seams mine flickers only with a none standard resolution.

Initially I thought it might be a display resoultion compatability issue between the external monitor and MacBook. Mine seems to flicker when the GPU kicks in (i.e. watching video, inputs: keyboard, trackpad, mouse, ect.)

I just erased my hard drive and reinstalled Mojave. No flickering until I changed the resolution from the default resolution to 1440x900.

Really? Weird. I always used mine at 1440x900 because that's the true "default". Maybe the flickering doesn't happen if you don't change the resolution?

So was it this thread that was responsible for all the damage this afternoon?

I'm going to stop by my local Apple store today and test out their display units and see if they exhibit the flickering issue. I will test out the Vega 16 and 20 units and report back what I find.

Hi,

I haven't noticed any screen flickering on my MBP with vega 20 but my Mac Pro had the same issues in macOS Sierra. When I changed the scaling (in order to have better readable fonts on my 4k monitor) the screen was flickering from time to time. The issue was solved by a macOS update. To me it sounds like a driver issue in Mojave.

Their floor model likely won't be hooked up to an external display.

The floor models won’t let you change the automatic graphics switching setting, so can’t quite replicate the circumstances in which I experienced flickering, at least. Believe me, I tried!

Wow! So that rules out the external display having anything to do with it.

Yeah, for me I never connected any external display. I was just using my MBP with nothing but the power cable connected, I updated to 10.14.2 and voilà, flickering.

Is there anyone who's experiencing those flickering issues without having the scaling / resolution changed? If not then it seems to be a macOS problem as mentioned above. In case someone can reproduce the flickering please check if the problem persists when changing the scaling / resolution to standard.

They had no Vega units on display at the Apple store to test :(

Just updated to Mojave 10.14.2 today and the screen started flickering. Happens every few seconds or so.

The model is 2.6 GHz/Vega 20/16 GB RAM/1 TB SSD.

Anyone else having the same problem with their Late Nov. MBP?

Observations (updated):

-It never happened once before updating macOS today.
-It happens when automatic graphic switching is disabled. Enabling graphics switching stops the flickering. Disabling it again does not cause the flickering to return.
-It happens more when I wake the computer from sleep.

Could anyone who has a Vega MBP and has updated to 10.14.2 do this test for me?

1. Set the scaled resolution to 1440x900.
2. Disable automatic graphics switching. (System Preferences --> Energy Saver)
3. Put the computer to sleep. Wait 5-10 seconds.
4. Wake the computer and begin using Safari or Chrome or Mail or any app. Do you see any flickering?

It happens exactly as described with my Vega20 I9, 32MB

"automatic graphic switching disabled" means that Vega is working.
Enabling means the computer probably switched back to HD630.

Means Vega has issues.
