5G will be the next best thing until 6G is on the horizon, when the hype machine will shift to a new gear. Meanwhile, it’ll be 4G speeds on 5G devices for most of America for the foreseeable future. 5G is absolute shimshammery perpetuated by the carriers for most of us.

I remember getting the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon back in 2011 when LTE was first launch and the speeds the first time I tested it with Speedtest I was blown away.

The 5G speeds I’ve been getting lately are worse than those early LTE tests LOL.

I wouldn’t blame  for this I blame the carriers for pushing something through that’s not ready and for giving up on LTE so easily.

Yes, the carriers are at fault - not Apple.

Apple merely integrated the Qualcomm 5G modem chips into the phone.

5G isn't really needed on phones for the average consumer. 5G was initially touted for business and medical applications. So far, that hasn't come to fruition either. Those hoping for 5G home internet and tv streaming plans will be waiting a long long time.

Thanks for always reading.

I spoke to a VZW rep today that really knew her sh@t.

me and my mom both got iPhone 12 pros and were concerned about the lackluster speeds on 5G.

ive been working with Apple and Verizon together and today got someone who really explained it well.

in regards to 5G on Verizon. It is NOT necessarily faster than 4g lte. Actually it’s speed is similar. All 5g is is a new technology that allows for different things. The ONLY time where 5g is crazy with speeds is with 5g UWB which is only in select cities right now.

she agreed that the advertising is very misleading and people are so misinformed about what 5g really is. It also utilizes a low band that provides better “something”.

it was nice to speak to someone who was very empathetic and totally got what I was saying. Actually finally I got what 5g really is. It’s just a new technology for cell phone carriers not necessarily speed enhancing.

she said when she was trained on 5g she new it would spark many phone calls coming into the center and she was correct.

when the 5g UWB is launched in a more bigger capacity then we will see one of the major benefits of 5g.

it was nice to be educated today by someone who really was very informative.

The big advantage of 5G at this point is that the sub-6 frequencies greatly reduce network congestion. The throughput on 5G towers are leaps and bounds better than 3G or 4G ever could be. You know those situations where you’re in a crowded area and you get super slow service despite having plenty of bars? That’s due to congestion. That shouldn’t be much of an issue with 5G. Given that we’re in a pandemic where large crowds are discouraged, most people likely haven’t experienced congestion in a while.

UWB will be most useful in public spaces like parks and stadiums where the carriers can put up multiple antennas around the area to blanket it in mmwave. Given that UWB has a terrible time penetrating walls, it’s going to be a long time before we see those kind of speeds ubiquitously.

Thank you :)

Let's face it. Verizon was asleep at the wheel when the FCC auctioned off spectrum for 5G. T-Mobile got the good spectrum, while Verizon is going to have to rely on 5G UWB for blazing speeds in very limited areas. You can put all the lipstick on the pig you want, but it's still a pig. In a few years, T-Mobile will be blowing Verizon away. I have been a Verizon customer for a very long time, but in a few years if if turns out to be true, I will be saying bye bye to Verizon.

I have both Verizon and att. How is att’s 5g

The one thing that I can say is Verizon does have the best voice coverage in America and that’s the most important thing to me :)

100% correct!

VZW with their advertising by their marketing dept sure has people fooled.

I have TMO and have strong 5G Sub6 service everywhere at around 90mbps (Los Angeles County) but do not have mm Wave (24-39 GHz) service unless I drive 40 miles to the west side of LA or the beaches....

But then TMO is ahead of the 5G curve with acquisition of Sprint which made it easier to convert them to 5G.

VZW is the slowest and least coverage for 5G because they are concentrating their efforts with short range non penetrating mm Wave instead of using a longer range, building penetrating Sub6 bands.
I had t mobile and Verizons 4g lte, is as fast or faster than t mobiles 5g in la

Every carrier could be free I still wouldn’t leave Verizon. Just disappointed in the false claims and what HANS claimed at the apple event. Oh well. My voice is the most important thing to me. That’s where Verizon trumps everyone.

don't worry. its not just Verizon or in the US. Here in Germany the big two (Telekom and Vodafone) are promoting the crap out of 5G on tv but little do they say about the actual coverage. For example they claim "now available in Berlin" but what they actually mean is "you may or may not get 5G in this or that street but as soon as you walk 20 meters away from one of our few antennas, it will switch back to LTE*"

*does not apply to the subway where its DEAD in general

Again? How is this Apple's fault?

When someone has a claim to make about something, (this case it’s Apples fault) they better have something to back it up or it’s just empty words. Anybody can walk up to a microphone or in this case a forum and print words, but you got to have something that actually makes sense in what you’re stating. Politicians do it all the time.

Dude, it’s a first gen 5g phone. 5g network isn’t even around most major cities. It’s going to be another year or two before you see the results you want on command.
This is true, but the way Verizon has been advertising this thing and hyping it up you would think this is not the case.... It's borderline false advertising and pretty deceiving to be honest.

Again, it's not Apple's fault for the carriers being slow on their 5G infrastucture.

If anything, you should go work for the carriers and build the 5G towers yourself if you want this new technology.

Apple merely incorporated modem hardware to accommodate use of 5G technology

If you choose to live in a non 5G area, then live with 4G that is much faster using this new modem hardware from Qualcomm.

I am lucky to live and work in 5G saturated areas...
