I hate how much this sucks. I was looking forward to combining my work and personal phones finally and keeping my numbers. I hate using google voice and carrying two devices. This would have solved that issue. I made sure to buy the new phone for this ONE feature, and now I feel that I was led on the entire time.

Anybody else thinking of returning their new iPhone?
If the time frame posted is true, it’s only at the most, 8 weeksfrom now. Can’t you just wait a lil?

No...they knew about this and had a timeframe, now nobody is held responsible...they new this since Spring when the DOJ started investigating them for making esim use difficult for consumers

Well I'm in no hurry.

I was hoping to port my AT&T SIM card to eSIM.

that way when I travel I can just pop in a SIM card for data only.

Using this the dual SIM functionality (SIM and eSIM) of XS to get away from Google Voice was one of the only reasons I was considering an upgrade from X to XS this year. I'm glad I held off to see how it played out.

I was hoping the same thing. I changed my mind to upgrade and if I wait until January, I might as well wait for next year’s new iPhones.

It’s ridiculous that Apple hasn’t produced the physical dual-sim model for all countries until e-sim is more readily available. The Middle East doesn’t have any carrier that supports esim and I feel it’s at least 1 year before we see it. Unofficial resellers are selling Hong Kong models for near official prices, sometimes the same price.

What possible reason do carriers have to make eSIM "more readily available," except that Apple is publicly pressuring them to do so? There is zero benefit to them and significant drawbacks: no $25-$30 BS "SIM fee" and no barrier to switching carriers at will. If Apple had released physical dual-SIM in the US we would never see the carriers support eSIM.

I don't get why they couldn't just allow dual physical SIMs worldwide instead of just in some countries.

Are the dual-sim capable sim slots really that hard to make?
Does anyone know if you can just buy a dual sim slot and pop it into a non Chinese model?

This is disappointing although not surprising. Carriers stand to lose money with many people using the new phones. They also need time to create new fees and plans centered around the eSIM use etc. There are reasons the carriers are dragging their proverbial feet, and it's not because of Apple.

Sorry, but I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself. They say they're working on it, you'll get your eSIM sooner or later, so just be a little patient.

Sure...but some of us bought the phone based on the premise that we would have dual SIM functionality sooner than later. I had an iPhone X...it worked fine...but I got the Xs MAX for the express purpose of being able to combine my work and cell phones. After I bought it, I found out the functionality wouldn't be available until 12.1 came out. Now that 12.1 is out, I'm hearing "by the end of the year"...I'm not getting ahead of myself when I say I spent $1400 for this to suck.

If I were Apple, I would make the next U.S. iPhone to have physical dual SIM ability. Stick it to the carriers hard until they learn to play nice.

If I can get eSIM by the end of the year, that will be good. if not, I sold one of my iPhone X's when I could have kept it.

Lucky was able to get my eSim activated through ATT before all this. Had eSim working since last Friday. I have not had any issues and my visual voicemail works.

Lucky I jumped the gun this time as well. I’ve had esim activated with AT&T since Sunday and a happily using both AT&T and Verizon on the same phone. Haven’t had any issues with either service. Switching back and forth primary voice and data is a breeze.

lucky to all that have done it if anyone was able to do it after they "pulled" it let us know I'm without a phone

So no carrier wants you to use another carrier nor miss on the opportunity to sell you a secondary device. Why is this at all surprising. Watch them add a $10 eSIM charge on top of the plan’s rate.

This is borderline ridiculous.

Apple is selling dual physical sim in China and HKG.

If carrier isn’t supporting in US- I want a full refund on my $1600 purchase.

So the argument I’ve seen multiple times against the possibility that Apple released a new phone without adequate development and testing of the modem and antenna is that they would never release a phone that wasn’t ready and risk huge fallout. Yet this clearly shows that Apple had at the very least not worked out all of the details with the eSim with the primary carriers in their home country. That sounds to me that Apple’s primary target was simply getting the phone out ‘on time’.

IMO, they failed miserably with this release.

Dual-SIM slots are more expensive to manufacture.

China demanded it, so Apple complied. The rest of the world relies on carrier support and eSIM is big barrier to switching carriers. Carriers prefer eSIM.
