So can you answer my question above? If I buy a used 4G device on ebay (Samsung Galaxy S or whatever) and activate it with unlimited data on Verizon, am I able to freeze my service indefinitely until I'm actually ready to switch to Verizon? I was told that you can only freeze up to twice a year for a total of 6 months but I'm not sure if that's right. In other words, is there any possible way to lock in unlimited 4G data right now without paying Verizon every month between now and the time my contract with AT&T is up (June 2012)?

hmm technically that should work. You can buy a used 4g phone, go to verizon say you want to activate this on a Month to month account. Once they set it up you can call verizon and tell them to suspend the line with no billing.

In theory, it should work. Of course we can't confirm what they're going to do after they unsuspend it for you, but it SHOULD work. Again, you can only do this for 6 months as you already know

Really?! Can I suspend it with no billing for a year (or however long I need until I'm ready to switch over permanently) and then just call to activate it with unlimited 4G data whenever I'm ready? In other words, if I'm month to month and suspend for a year, will I still be grandfathered in to unlimited data when I'm ready to activate the service again? If so, do I need to pay a monthly cost to suspend the line?

Also, what would be my best bet for the cheapest 4G-capable smartphone right now? I know that prices will vary depending on where I buy one but I assume that the oldest possible 4G smartphone will be the cheapest one. This will be a device that I won't even use since I'll eventually be upgrading to 4G-capable iphone down the road.

Ah, so it is a maximum of 6 months, huh? Could I activate for a month and then suspend again for 6 months or is it only a total of 6 months suspended service allowed per year?

people will definitely get grandfathered in. however, the key issue is that i doubt they will keep you grandfathered if you go from 3g to 4g phone or 4g phone to 3g phone. Because those plans are totally different in our system.

this is basically what I thought would happen. I think the only way is to get a 4g phone with unl dadta now and hope you can upgrade to the 4g iphone with data plan grandfathered

It seems like many people are assuming that Verizon will grandfather existing unlimited users. Couldn't they just switch everyone?

Potentially, but it's been common practice by both Verizon and other carriers to grandfather people in to their existing rate plans, keeping them there at least until their contract expires so long as the user doesn't change anything (like upgrade phones or switch rate plans on their own).

If they didn't, Verizon would probably catch hell for not grandfathering in people when AT&T so far has. On top of the fact that it seems Verizon's data plans are about $5 more expensive than AT&T's on the average.

They COULD be jerks and switch everyone, and as someone else said, that would probably be a good argument to get out of your contract. But then again, most people using the iPhone on Verizon are doing that because they can't or won't go to AT&T anyway, which is the only other real option (unless you want to use your spiffy iPhone 4 on T-Mobile's EDGE network).

Even so, I doubt a forced changeover will happen.

AT&T if your grandfathered in now, you will stay grandfathered in for good.

i never said with verizon you won't be grandfathered in. You will be. However, your not grandfathered in to a plan that you DONT have. the 3g and 4g unlimited data plans are different in verizon's internal system. So technically they only have to grandfather you in to 3g to 3g phones or 4g to 4g.

Do it before 7/7/11

I have Samsung Fascinate (3g) droid with unlimited plan - can I grandfather unlimited to iphone 5 in September if it's 3G?

Yes, but most likely only if the iPhone 5 is 3G as well.

What S.Hasan is saying is 3G & 4G show up different on the computer systems of any Verizon or Best Buy store (I used to work there).

Personally I believe the iPhone 5 will still be a 3G device, so no issue there but the iPhone 6 in 2012 will most likely be 4G and Verizon won't have to grandfather you in.

Hopefully when that time comes around a debate will spark and Verizon will indeed grandfather in 3G users in 4G. Afterall, they've only have the iPhone for less than a year; I'd think they'd wanna keep a good amount of their original customers.

I am an Indirect Agent for Verizon. Everyone is correct when the say 3G and 4G plans are different. It is just like the original internet card plans we used to have. You were grandfathered in unless you go to a current 4G plan and you must change then.

Same with older senior and emergency plans. For some of those folks on older cheaper plans to upgrade there phone they had to change for a more current plan.

True, when workinng at Best Buy, even with those verizon credentials when calling their direct line, I couldn't even modify my own plan to my benefit.

Personally, I can see it now where the situation will come and I'll want to upgrade my 3G iPhone to 4G and spend hours on the end with Verizon without any results. I'd imagine the best offer Verizon would give me then is a discount of sorts, but in no way grandfather me into unlimited 4G. For Verizon, I see this as a tall order. The only way I truly see 3G users being ushered into 4G unlimited is if enough people proactively seek out for it and noise is made.
