I followed the instructions, got a helpful chat agent. All was fine except no data once the eSIM activated.
The trouble was that the phone still had a memory of another line and the eSIM for VZW was not configured as primary, so it wouldn’t do data at all. I popped in my spare (expired) lebara.de SIM, and then I was able to set Verizon as primary and all is now well.

Does the Chinese version work outside of China? Somehow that seems a much easier solution and not reliant on carriers.

Everything on the Chinese models works fine in other regions, EXCEPT for FaceTime Audio (video is fine), as it is not allowed in China.

On the phone with Verizon now. It’s not going well. They’re calling Apple because the IMEI number is “locked” by Apple. It’s a factory unlocked phone. WTF.

It’s super annoying that they don’t have this ironed out.

Does Verizon even have a training department? This process is a joke. 45 minutes on the phone and we’re no closer to getting this done than when we began.

This has been a terrible experience. After 3 agent is still not set up. Every time I try to scan the QR code it says it's expired and no longer valid. SMH!

Please first use another carrier sim card so it can be unlocked for first time.

Make sure that iphone is unlocked. Will unlock after you insert another carrier sim card for the first time.

Then contact Verizon, and request a QR Code for eSIM via email.

restart your iphone. I was getting code no valid error message, got rid of it after a restart.

Activation of eSIM will take about 15 min, no carrier or phone will be there until around 15 min.

i got it working already.

Literally you don't even know what you're talking about. This is an unlocked, paid in full iPhone XS Max.

first insert another carrier sim card. this will finalize the unlock process.

This is beyond crazy....they really have no clue as to what is going on or how to make this work. The reps I have been on the phone with have tried to be very helpful, but they have not had training or provided info on this. I also tried getting an esim on AT&T...even worse.

I am being told the same thing. Hopefully they figure it out soon. Did yours ever get resolved?

Finally was transferred to a "tech" that was able to do it for me.

Now I'm really confused between primary and secondary? I remove the sim and have no service? Ugh.

EDIT: Finally fully working, it took a while too fully activate.

Look, on Verizon Network it won't matter is you already paid your phone or not. It is locked until you pop another carrier sim card for first time.

So please insert a Tmobile, ATT sim card on your Verizon Phone.

Then after restart, it will be fully unlocked.

Got it working; have them get someone from Telesales on the line..I was the first that both reps had done, but once he got the esim IMEI number tied to the QR code properly it went right through. Put my physical ATT sim in the sim card slot and both are now working. It was a long process, but hopefully they have it figured out now.

I wish we knew exactly what they did, because now I'm on with technical support and they still can't figure it out.
[doublepost=1544202254][/doublepost]Here is what worked for me. Per the tech support rep:

Put the digital eSIM (IMEI number under Digital eSIM in settings) in place of DEVICE ID on Verizon's system and the physical SIM needs to be erased in their system. This will reactivate, and it randomly activates a sim card number. When that's done, it generates a QR code to be emailed to the customer and then there's about a 5 minute activation wait for the phone to connect to their system.

And test with Verizon rep before you get off the phone. :)

Took me almost 4 hours today on the phone to find someone at Verizon whom knew how to set this up. I'm online now but holy Jesus it was interesting. if you call to get this added tell them to build it like an Apple Watch FYI that's what the manager ended up doing. Once I get my QR code it was super easy on the iPhone XS Max. Its 45 a month for this feature FYI they'll only do it as an Unlimited plan and they do a 30 dollar activation fee but if your nice and not notty you can get that waived

LOL no. There is no extra charge to use an eSIM.
