This is exactly what I was thinking... if I already have an iPhone (or other hotspot capable phone) on Verizon, what would be the compelling reason to go with an LTE iPad (or other tablet with 3G or LTE) over just a wi-fi version?

How about because I already bought one knowing I could turn data on and off when I needed it? Didn't want to drain my phone battery nor carry a cable around nor risk someone grabbing the iPad to look at it and knocking the pone to the ground (of course I'd seriously maim anyone that touched my iDevices without asking but that's a whole other story)

This is so stupid.
Right now I have a iPhone 4S on AT&T with Unlimited data, 1000 texts, and 450 minutes. With rollover minutes, I basically have unlimited since I use GMail to make calls now anyway. I pay just under $80/mo with my student discount ... like $79.53 or something.

I also have an LTE iPad on Verizon for $20/mo with just 1GB of data.

On average I use 3GB of data per month total between these devices. However, I'd be more comfortable having 4GB.

So, right now I pay $100/month (including taxes) but with Verizon I'd have to pay $120 (+ taxes!) and I lose my unlimited data on AT&T. That's a 25% increase for something I'd use more data on since it's LTE and faster!

Even if I stuck with AT&T I'd still get 3GB there and have 1GB on my iPad for $100/mo total. Why would I switch to Verizon??

While I realize everyone's needs are different, for my family, this new program results in amazing monthly savings.

We will go from paying $380/month down to about $280/month for 4 iPhones + 1 MiFi sharing 10 gigs across those devices, plus unlimited minutes. Last month alone I burned over 2000 minutes just on my line ( business calls).

$100 cheaper per month for equal data and unlimited voice/text is a great deal for us!

Here's the deal: people are no longer texting/talking like they used to. Smartphones are the "now" thing and more people have them, using apps that consume gobs and gobs of data. Like Pandora, Google Maps, Scanner Radio, and hundreds more. Verizon is ripping us off (telling us where to go and making us actually enjoy the trip to Hell) while making it seem like they are our best friends. Ever hear of the phrase, wolf in sheeps clothing? Applies here.

I am on unlimited data and my only choice to keep unlimited data going forward is to buy a phone at full unsubsidized price which will be around 700 dollars or more with tax. Ok with me. I will gladly spend a grand on a phone if I can keep unlimited data. But....since I am paying megabucks for the phone why do I have to be locked into a 2 year plan? This is where Verizon is becoming coy with us. And I don't like it!!

If you buy a phone unsubsidized, you will not be locked into contract. Unfortunately, that also means Verizon can cancel your unlimited data anytime they want.

Unlimited is dead :(. Sprint's .5mbit / high latency data is not a good alternative. There's a reason they give you unlimited.

2 GB of data is what I am going to "test the waters with". I can adjust my plan up to 10 GB and not pay more than I'm currently paying. I do have wiggle room, if I need it. I'm just excited to be potentially save $30 a month :).

In five years the plans could be completely different. I have a feeling data caps will rise, as 4G competition picks up.

Down the road, all of the carriers will have solid 4G coverage. This will allow for market competition. Right now Verizon is well ahead of the pack for 4G coverage. If you want nationwide 4G, there is no alternative. If T-Mobile or Sprint had solid 4G coverage and data speeds, with their current pricing, I'd switch to them in a heartbeat. The problem is they don't. The majority of people in these forums threatening to switch to another provider will have to deal with inferior service.

In the end, you get what you pay for. I for one am willing to pay extra for a 10 + mbit connection. I can see why others don't want to. Solution? Switch to Sprint or T-Moble. This is the same for most markets. If you can't afford / have no use for a Lexus, you can buy a Toyota. They are both nice, but the Lexus will get you there quicker :). (I am not trying to sound like a snob, I drive a Honda lol...just pointing out an analogy)

Fair enough. I for one though will not support Verizon by signing up for this new rate plan. All they are doing if forcing customers to pay the built in premium for unlimited mins and texts that the vast majority of customers do not need. Current AT&T customer possibly switching family plan to tmobile once they are done refarming. I wouldn't be using the car analogy to compare carriers. Verizon and att are acting like a duopoly. Verizon thinks they can get away with this plan.. We will see in the coming years where the customers end up going :)

Verizon should have applied the usage-based approach to the data allotment where every month you start with 1gb and adjusts up to the next tier once you reached 1gb, etc rather than picking x amount of data every month which you may or may not use all of every month (but more profitable I'm guessing)

Why does everyone assume that they will be able to keep their unlimited plans when the iPhone 5 hits? I'm betting your unlimited 3G plan will be grandfathered (although likely soft capped like AT&T does), but the LTE access brought on by the new phone will almost certainly let them force a new contract onto iPhone 5 users.

If you moved from an Android LTE device to an iPhone 5, im guessing you'll be safe.

All they are doing if forcing customers to pay the built in premium for unlimited mins and texts that the vast majority of customers do not need.

Not really.

Currently, an unlimited talk/text plan on Verizon is $90/month for a single line. If you want a family plan with unlimited text/talk it costs a LOT more....almost $200.

So really, what they've done is given you two lines unlimited talk/text at less than the cost of a single unlimited plan today. Then they increased the current 2G data plan by $5 per line. For two Smartphone users looking for unlimited talk/text and the standard 2G plans, this new program is far cheaper.

And for all the Unlimited users expressing shock and outrage....where have you been? You've got a bounty on your head.....drop your plan or leave. They don't want your business under current contracts and this is all about getting rid of you.

They are in effect a duopoly. This is just a indication that they know it.

One thing I have not seen anyone mention: I have been lead that Verizon (and ATT) believes that data is limited as is spectrum space, so as we move to more and more smartphone usage, unlimited data must end. They just can not support us using our phones as intended without us paying for each byte we use. Now we are told sure you can keep your unlimited as long as you don't ask us for your phone to be subsidized.

So which is it: IS the network not going to be able to handle us or DO they just want to make more off each of us?

----------

One other thought as your considering how this will affect you and your plans, go back and reread what people were saying about their usage as they were just receiving their new ipads in 4G. Those who have not used LTE have a hard time understating I think, just how fast you can burn through 2,3, or 4 GB's of data.

Probably, that's what scares me. I'll probably try to stay with my existing plan. We'll see how it goes.

Not sure why you're making the assumption AT&T will be worse.

AT&T's data plans/prices have generally been better than Verizon's and rollover minutes are essentially 'unlimited'.

Verizon always got higher marks on call quality/reliability, but I've always found AT&T plans to give more 'bang for your buck'

Question

I'm hoping someone can answer this question for me (I apologize if its already been asked, I couldn't find it). Im on a family plan now and were on alternating upgrades (I upgrade this year, she upgrades next year). How would this work if I upgraded my phone again this year? Would they take me out of the plan we're contracted for right now?

Thanks!

I'm not sure the answer to your question but I have the exact same one.

I have two lines, mine (primary) and my wife's. November of 2011 I upgraded her line to an iPhone 4S for me. :D My line is also eligible but I was sitting on it until the release of the new iPhone.

With these new plans, what happens in, say, October when the new iPhone comes out and I want to upgrade? If I buy one of these shared-data plans and upgrade my line (primary), will hers automatically get updated to the plan? More importantly, what will that do to our upgrade dates? I like having one line upgrading per year (fall) so pretty much every year I can pick up a new phone.

Well, it's NOT perfect, but I'll take it... as soon as AT&T gets it.

Right now, with my 700 Minute family plan with AT&T, my setup is like this:

$70 for "700 minutes" (we use hardly any).
$30 for my iPhone's "unlimited data" plan (with its 3GB cap).
$30 for unlimited messaging (we go through thousands).
$10 for daughter's "dumbphone."
$10 for wife's "dumbphone."

$150 for just *me* to have an iPhone, no tethering, and my wife and daughter limited to their basic phones.

With this new plan (if AT&T styles it like Verizon's), for another $40, we could get a 4GB shared plan, iPhones for for both my wife and daughter, and tethering enabled for all of our devices.
It's still a bad price, but better than dealing with terrible $20 plans for them and/or paying another $20 on top to get tethering on one device.

If you just added iPhones to your plan you would pay the same $40 more and get 9gb of data (counting your unlimited as 3gb, based on throttling and pricing, etc) instead of 4.

You already have unlimited texts, you have unlimited mobile to any mobile calling, and enough minutes for your current calling. You would gain access to tethering, which SHOULD be included in any capped data plan (of course it's not) especially now that the base level is a $30/3gb plan. How is this a good deal in any way?

Thanks, yea I saw the same article as well.

I'm not sure about your last statement. If you are currently under contract with voice/text + your unlimited data, all you have to do is to get a new iPhone at full price and you can continue using your current plan. There is no need to sigh a new contract, you are going to be consider a free agent month to month base.

Verizon makes the most money on data you don't use. If you have a 2 GB plan and you only use 500 MB, Verizon wins big.

I didn't assume they would be worse, I assumed they would be as bad. (or very close)

At what point is this really a duopoly? Also, at what point does Apple get fed up? I guess they don't really care, but so much of the iPhone, iCloud, iLife stuff is built off of high data amounts. I guess they don't care if we keep spending.

This actually provides at&t an opportunity to snipe off Verizon customers with the next iPhone upgrade... if they only are smart enough to take it. If they compete on price again, they'll be doing a whole lot better than they are currently, with competing on networks that will be essentially the same.

My experience with both Verizon and at&t is that they've got about the same network quality... price competition is needed! I'm pretty sure I'm going to dump at&t for prepaid plans w/ Google voice shortly....

Exactly, it won't improve unless we start switching to Sprint/T-Mobile en masse....which won't happen since those networks are nowhere near as strong.

My experience is that Verizon has always had a better network. But AT&T has done a lot in the past few years to catch up. With the new pricing and AT&T doing better, I'm now rethinking my plan to migrate back to Verizon.
