Got Mine

The decision for me was speed / data, vs making client calls (work from home) without dropping calls every hour on the phone.

Since most of my time is spent in WiFi anyway, I chose the "fewer dropped calls" option.

Also, while AT&T is faster, that's only if you have AT&T full signal. All too often I find myself sitting with my current iPhone (3GS) with 0-1 bars, and friends with Verizon (droids) with full bars. My faster speed doesn't help the fact that I still have no signal.

I'd prefer better coverage of slower speeds. Where I need faster speeds, I have WiFi.

Ordered 1 for me, 1 for wife (who wouldn't switch to AT&T) at 3am this morning.

Yeah, I know...."but I want to make a call". With Smartphones, calling is actually a feature that is used the least. Smartphones demand speed and multitasking.....Verizon can not offer those.

Not everyone uses the phone like you do. Who cares who fast the connection can theoretically be and if you can or cannot multitask if you don't have a freaking signal anyway! Why is this so hard for some people to comprehend!!!???!!!

I don't agree. If someone was selling a computer but said , "Oh, you can not access the internet while you are talking on your phone", you'd call that insane.

However, I do understand the concern of those people in NY and SF who have lousy signals today.

why does a 60-year old woman need an iphone?

To Jailbreak it, and run Mywi....

Seriously...who cares? I know a 68 year old grandmother of 6 who has one (with the minimal ATT data plan). My mom (who is 65) is contemplating getting a 3GS....if she doesn't by summer, I may give her my 3GS after I get iPhone 5 (or whatever it is called).

Why?

The display. The buttons on the screen are larger and better lit when making calls. It can be easier for a senior to place a call on that nice display than pecking at small buttons.

The perks of having pictures and videos of the grandkids on the device are icing on the cake.

I've always said that phone manufacturers....could make a touch screen phone, but not have all the smartphone features....could sell a boatload to seniors.

Dear Google/Android/Honeycomb & wp7-

Watch your back.

Apple's iOS is about to shove it's foot up your collective backsides... even more.

This is WAR! =)

If someone was selling you a phone and told you, but you only get signal 80% of the time and even when you do you will drop 70% of you calls is that is ok???? That is what some people get with AT&T. Even when I have a AT&T data signal the transfer rates are horrible.

It isn't just in NY and SF that people have lousy signals and coverage.

I've never used an iPhone, but let me ask you guys a question.

I have both a 3G cell phone on AT&T and a 3G Blackberry on T-Mobile (both use the same technology). 99% of the time when I am on a call, the phone drops from 3G to EDGE, which is NOT capable of simultaneous voice/data. Whenever I want to tether my laptop to my Blackberry and talk on the phone at the same time, I have to use a headset, set my Blackberry aside, and NOT touch it, otherwise it will drop to EDGE. I don't know what the technological downfall is that causes this phenomena.

Anyways, everyone talks about using data and voice simultaneously on the iPhone. Does it not that have this issue??

Got 2 on reserve for pick up tomorrow at Apple. I've had a pretty good experience with AT&T in terms of customer service these past few months, and have nothing but good things to say about them. Unfortunately the reception issue is driving this decision for us.

In most places around town AT&T gets good reception and good speeds. It's a shame that the moment you turn down our street the bars drop for 4-5 to 1-2. Making a completed phone call in our home without losing signal, break-ups, or drops is almost like hitting the lottery.

Facetime is "disabled" on any cell phone plan, Verizon or AT&T (unless jailbroken) because it needs WiFi to work. It won't do it over 3G no matter who your contract is with. Both users must be connected to a high-speed WiFi network.

We were both in the same house, both on wifi. Try again.

What makes you so much more important than a 60 year old lady. Are older people not allowed to use high tech gadgets? Didn't know there was an age restriction

Seriously. What a whack statement. I just got my 62 year old mother set up with an Android on Sprint. She loves it. She picked it up like a pro, and was showing me stuff I never knew you could do within two weeks of owning it.

I like ATT moreso as well. Easy to get your bill reduced for overages. That aside, I use voice/data simultaneously, and its good that (dont remember all if it) they'll be offering tethering with 2 additional gigs, and, big plus if I am remembering correctly, wifi tehering without jailbreaking. Would make sense to offer that... I dont think there will be unlimited ATT, but I think more data will be made available as time goes by. And, theres always companies like clearwire to get unlimited internet inexpensively, making it easy to downgrade service with ATT if necessary.

Seriously, the "why does a 60 year-old woman need an iPhone" comment is the dumbest post I've ever seen on any forum ever.

Maybe she would like an iPhone for the same reason Apple felt it was important to create this iPhone 4 commercial featuring an elder man portraying a new grandfather:

This will be a moot point in one year or two (hopefully one ) when the real 4g iPhones are out on both networks.

I am happy that I know have a iPhone that works outside ATT 3g coverage area

Should come a lot earlier then the est ship date. 1st round all said 10th, but came on 7th (Monday) mostly.

My BB had terrible reception at my house, iPhone is perfect. DL speeds mostly around 1.3Mps, not much more I can do with anything over that. Had it in a case and always will so don't even care to test signal grip. I love this phone, still can't believe VZ got it. Talk and surf all the time as I'm in wi-fi at home and work. Next gen should have LTE anyway, and not have that "issue". Love the iPhone!

Do not understand all the negative votes for this. Isn't this the news so many people have been waiting for, for years?

Maybe the negatives are for the antenna; I have heard if you hold the phone, completely cupped, in hands that are sheathed in lead gloves, while shuffling your feet rapidly over a wool carpet, within 100 feet of high-tension power lines, there are reception problems.

I agree 100%! I had an iphone 4 on at&t and i travel a lot. I drive all over the country and little things like not being able to use pandora because if I was not in a major city I was on edge. super slow data and you cant surf and talk anyway. Im with you i will take a small hit in speed for the huge 3g footprint, and way less dropped calls on big red any day. I have been doing speed tests on my new viphone and really its not that bad. Im happy. :)

The guy is in poor coverage to begin with, and he's completely insulating the phone. People who buy this **** are complete idiots.

That said, my mom (58 years old) stayed up and pre-ordered at 2am, and got her iPhone yesterday. We activated it, and I couldn't facetime her because she had an alltel plan that was absorbed by verizon a few years back. She pays a little less, so unless she switches to a V plan, facetime is disabled.

Still the same DB's they were when I bailed for ATT because they had disabled features on my razr (mp3 playback disabled unless music was bought $3 a song from their V store, bluetooth file transfer removed, no custom ringtones, etc) and wanted me to pay extra to re-enable them.

You do realize FaceTime works on wifi and not cell service so FaceTime should work if she has wifi at home? And u have to activate FaceTime. The carrier does no have a say in FaceTime at all. U can have metropc and FaceTime would still work as long as it's on wifi.

On a more serious note, I really think Verizon is a step backwards:

  • Much slower speed

  • Not true.

Verizon is, in fact, FASTER. Cnet did a test and it was faster in 14 out of the 16 tests done . I live in the mid-west and it is faster here too. See the Cnet video. And just wait. There will be videos popping up all over the internet comparing the two. What will you say when Verizon is found to be faster overall?

On a more serious note, I really think Verizon is a step backwards:

  • Much slower speed -ooo nooo my 53kb email will take forever! riiiight
  • No concurrent Voice/Data (you Verizoner's have no idea what you are missing!)-Actually, been there, dont that..moved on
  • No 'real' international coverage (like Europe!)-What will we ever do? How will we ever survive. O, thats right, other options!

Yeah, I know...."but I want to make a call". With Smartphones, calling is actually a feature that is used the least. Smartphones demand speed and multitasking.....Verizon can not offer those.-Said by smart phone expert leader of all smart phone users

The iPhone 4 supports speeds of 7.2MB....and the next iPhone 5 will likely support HSPA+ which will run at 14.4Mbs. AT&T will support those speeds but Verizon can not....they are stuck on CDMA (max=3mb). Said by the person holding the iPhone 5 (in a bar)

My comments in Bold for you
War is over folks, AT&T is no longer king of the iPhone. People now have options.

Get over it!
