Hats off to the Verge for breaking this story BEFORE pre-orders started. Imagine the storm this news would've set off had it been announced 24 hours from now while people were still recovering from their "I just spent six hours fighting with an overwhelmed server to pre-order a phone" hangover.

That really sucks. It would definitely be a deal-breaker for me if I were considering them as a carrier. People can bash AT&T all they want but I have never had bad customer service, billing problems, or issues with my voice or data failing me. I guess I'm one of the lucky few.

And unused minutes carry over to the next month. Go ATT!

Does anyone think there's any chance that GPS/turn-by-turn nav will still work while on a call on the Verizon iPhone 5? I guess the Apple Maps app would have to be smart enough to cache the map data within, say, a 50-mile radius of where you are at all times since it won't be able to download map data while on a call.

Is this just wishful thinking?

In my experience with IOS 6 maps, if you load a route while you are connected, you will continue to get turn by turn directions even when you have no data connection. The main limitation is that if you drive off your route you are not 're-routed' automatically without a data connection. Also, because the new maps are vector based, rather than bitmaps, they scale much better than the google maps, you can even zoom in and out quite a bit without data if the map has been previously loaded (I even had to reset my phone while I was out of the country without a data connection, and the maps stayed cached and were still usable.)

Name me 3 occasions where you absolutely need voice and data that you simply can't look up after the phone call? Do we have ADD so bad to a point where while talking to someone we need to browse the web and check facebook?

It's the end of the world as we know it ...

Just because its not important TO YOU doesn't mean its not important to other people.

I really wish people would stop for a second before they post and ask themselves this question "Am I the only person in the world?" If the answer to that question is NO, then guess what YOUR needs and YOUR way of doing things might not be the same as all those BILLIONS of other people.

If you don't need simultaneous voice and data, or you are happier with Verizon even if you DO want it, then great. Other people think its important enough to NOT choose Verizon (or Sprint) because their phones lack this.

It's ok to have different wants/needs than other people. Just don't be an ****** about it.

I was wondering how long it would take for people to come in and defend Apple's technological limitations.

It's not a matter of absolutely needing it. It is a matter of convenience. I was just on a road trip where I was on the phone with someone and had to look up the location of a restaurant. Did both on my LTE Nexus with no problems. It was more convenient than hanging up, looking it up, and then calling back.

Your reasoning is just silly. You are aware this was probably a decision by Apple so that they could maintain form over function right? Why make the product larger by adding another antenna when we could just skimp on a feature and never tell people about.

My 2 cents...
Even hough I'm getting one tonight I cannot help thinking that everything about the iPhone 5 seems limited, restricted or has an excuse.
For the first time in my life I've been considering Samsung Galaxy S3, which is unbelievable for me. Apparently it's not happening due to my reliance on the Apple ecosystem.
From what I've heard from random people that I know I can say this iPhone was not met enthusiastically, moreover, some of them think it's a failure.
If Apple stick with this design for the next rendition and add up just minor features, it will be disappointing. I think this year it has become really obvious that Apple will have to work hard if they want to be where they were a couple of years ago in terms of their dominance on the mobile market.

I think you are overblowing it. The only people disappointed were the tech bloggers who were hoping against hope the leaks were fake. Most financial analysts think the phone will sell well, and they are right. Every phone has compromises. My mom has the Galaxy S3, and it's a plasticky piece of junk as far as I'm concerned. It looks cheap, feels cheap, and is bulky to handle because it's so big. People are overly impressed by big screens these days. I don't get it.

I agree that maybe adding a 3rd antenna, at least to the VZW version, might have made sense in this case, but they didn't. Evaluate the phone on its merits as a whole.

this sucks

well i deff think this is kinda stupid. Poeple have been waiting for this for a very long time and that apple wont allow this on their new phone is kind lame. Pretty much every 4G phone does. But i guess u can maybe use Voice over IP.

I know the company fairly well and I am fairly certain that the person that gave this response is not qualified to give this response. Look at the language of the reply. It's very unprofessional IMHO. I also think that there is 10 people at VZ that actually held iPhone 5 in their hand and worked with Apple to develop it. They are the ones that would know if the device will do voice and data at once or not. Until either Apple makes a statement or I test it myself I will not take this response as a fact.

It would not surprise me at all if VZW had a hand in at least the specifications of the iPhone 5. Remember that CDMA is mostly a US thing, and by far VZW is Apple's most important CDMA network customer. If they insisted on SVDO they likely could have gotten their way. That said, it is curious that Apple left it out.

I was just about to move to Verizon but...

this is a total deal breaker. I actually use a Verizon MiFi spot and it is blazing fast.

I was so psyched to ditch AT&T but now I'm stuck with them again (for 2 more years.)

I hope this is the experience with the Verizon iPhone 5. I've found that I rarely miss having the ability to surf the web over the cell network while talking on the phone. However, being able to keep using turn-by-turn provided I don't deviate from the route is something that would be very useful to me.

use every day:

1. while talking on the phone waiting for your friend at starbucks, your friend asked you "what is the address of starbuck u r at?" you look up the address and tell him.

2. you use GPS on the phone navigating while driving and talking handfree from it via Bluetooth

3. You talk on the phone while downloading song from iTune

4. Over the phone someone said he sends u an email, did you get it? You open ur mail and check....

5. You talk on the phone then u get a text message from another iPhone that require data, since iMessage does not use cellular but use data between iPhones. Do you never text/receive text/reply text during a call?? It happens all the time.

6. Check weather/traffic/stock while on call

7. use any app that require data (most do) while on a call

8. use WebEx or any other tele conference app that require you to use data and phone at the same time. (WebEx will dial to your cell phone. you answer the phone, turn on the app, then you see the desktop of the meeting host so he can present to you.)

webex.com

there are sooooo many other examples i seriously think u use this more than 3x a year. i use it every day.

Are you really doing all that stuff on 3G? I'm using Sprint, which is miserable, and could never, ever use a teleconference app unless I was on wifi.

Also, you can receive texts during a call - they just come through as standard text messages rather than iMessages.

Maybe I'm not as mobile as everyone! Most of my phone calls are at home or at work, where I'm on wifi anyway.

I understand Apple's decision. It's bad for the Verizon customers but those people are a small minority. Most of the world doesn't even use CDMA. Plus most people don't even surf when they talk. Thicker iPhone because of a third antenna just for some corner case? No thanks!

Sometimes when you are restricted from doing tasks, you don't miss them over time.

I use this daily while on the phone with a client- rates, email, market, Dropbox, you name it.

You may want to look into a couple of great new inventions. Laptop and a tablet.

If you use a VZW MiFi anyway, can't you just turn that on and use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot for a Verizon iPhone 5 while on a call?

You could not be more wrong, there is no way Apple would let verizion dictate to them to put a third antenna in the phone. Face it, cdma is old tech, wait a couple of years and you will be able to do both on verizion.

:apple:

This is going to cause problems for people on AT&T as well. Apparently the device will default back down to 3G when you are browsing talking at the same time. It wont support simultaneous 3G/LTE just like it won't support simultaneous CDMA/LTE. It will still be usable, just slow as hell compared to when you are off the phone.

Meh, it would be nice to have but coverage is far more important to me, and AT&T coverage sucks in too many areas I frequent. I have lived without this feature through various Palm, Windows, Android and Apple phones so it's not like I can't survive without it. But I absolutely cannot stand having no service like on AT&T. If AT&T coverage was better in my area, I might feel different.

This is why I stick with AT&T among other reasons. I need to be able to talk on the phone and work on remote machines at the same time. Also, AT&T has always been a very good provider for me. The only issue I have is when I go in to very rural areas where there is only Verizon coverage. But that's pretty rare and a concession I am willing to make. Also, I don't like how Verizon nickel dimes their customers.

While not really surprising it's somewhat disappointing. At least for me while traveling I'll have two devices in the vehicle and can either browse on the second or use the wifi hotspot functionality.

95% of the time I have wifi normally when this would occur, so it doesn't bother me much.

However, for some friends of mine who live down in Chicago it's a real deal breaker while sitting/waiting around for the train.
