Correct.

Unless you're in Chicago or Minneapolis, AT&T's implementation of LTE is data only. On their network, the phone has to drop down to "4G" (which is actually a fast 3G) in order to support simultaneous voice and data for the duration of the call.

Well that's good to know. Even though it's pretty lame on AT&T's part. I'm I missing out on better call quality because there's on LTE or voice?

Verizon iPhone 6 Unlocked from the factory for GSM?

Does it have to be an activated GSM SIM card? Can I walk into an AT&T store and sign up for new service and port my Verizon number to them?

No it does not have to be an activated gsm sim already and yes u can get service on it

so - to triple confirm - I have an iPhone 6 on Verizon, model MG612LL/A -- will I be able to use this in Europe by putting in a local SIM card?

Nothing lame about it, AT&T has a lot of towers to roll out updates to.
Not a quick thing to do.

T-Mobile already has VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and the all quality is much better.

Be sure that you will be fine. I bought my 5s from Verizon with contract for $199 and using it in Singapore right now and has no problem with GSM. I used it in Europe as well.
I use M1 SIM card in my Verizon iPhone 6 but no valid SIM card appear

Going strictly by the ad copy, I'd say odds are it won't work on Verizon. It's a model A1549, which is a GSM model from AT&T. It might work on some Verizon bands if present, but it would first have to be unlocked. The description specifically says it will only work on AT&T. Why would you chance it? (I think the person writing the ad is a bit mixed up, so it's hard to tell exactly what state of unlock that phone is in.)
